| Older female pregnant Hello my Yorkie Katie is pregnant and was not supposed to happen she is 9 as of May 11 and as far as I can tell she got caught on March 28. She is now at a temp of 99.9 but my concern is she is panting all the time. She don't seem to ever cool off and rest. She is still eating and seems to be always drinking water. She is also going out like on a normal day. I am worried because I lost my job and wasn't able to get her spayed to prevent this and also any other problems. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions. I just moved back to Houston so I don't have an account with a vet. Please help I really don't want to lose her. I took her to the vet a few months ago to get her shots and heart worm meds and also had her tested blood work and all because she was just acting funny and was told she is healthy except for her knee bothering her. Her hormones were out of wack some is why she was just being different. I know this happened because her seasons have been few and far between and she came into season and I didn't know it fast enough and our little two year old boy yorkie did what nature told him. My wife and I caught them and thought it was in time but were wrong. Thanks. |

| Poor Katie. I'm sorry that during her 9 years you never had the $100 or so to spay her. Of course she was going to get pregnant with an unneutered (why?) dog in the house with her. She's a senior dog now, & I'm hoping you don't lose her.

| If you vaccinated/heartwormed meds given while she was pregnant, you of course also face the possibility the babies will have deformities, depending on what stage of development the babies were in. How many babies is she carrying? When you have a breeder that has been correctly maintained and conditioned and fine tuned as you would an athelete, which breeding females are, then she should have no problems with having puppies at this age. I am a little concerned this is not the case, as you have two intact dogs under the same roof and apparently did not plan on a breeding. You need to be sure the vet you are using is well versed in care and treatment of whelping Yorkies and small dogs in general.....do YOU know anything about whelping puppies, or how to raise orphaned babies if that becomes necessary due to mommas death or her disinterest? Do you have the finances to pay for an emergency c-section....if not, this will be another issue for you to figure out, BEFORE it happens. You need to minimize as many of the issues you are facing....you need to know how many puppies you have, if they are small enough to pass thru her pelvic ring....you need an xray to determine this. Good luck to you with this risky situation.... |

To megssports - first, welcome to YT . I wish it was under better circumstances. I'm very, very worried for this precious little dog bc it sounds to me as if you don't have a way to pay for vet care if it's needed. What is your plan if a C-section is needed, what will you do? She absolutely needs an xray so you know what you're dealing with. PLEASE ask your vet AHEAD of time if there is any way he/she would accept a payment plan for you for this pregnancy - it's very worth asking since this birth could be life or death for your girl. Wishing you the very best of luck.

You absolutely need an Xray done to see how many puppies, to understand if the pelvic area will be wide enough for her to deliver what-ever number of pups she is expecting. A C-section at her age and with a first litter is not un-expected and that will cost $$. Try to find a whelping coach who will help you out before during and after the delivery. You can ask your vet for recommendations. Speaking about the vet, you need to know now if he/she is experienced with whelping and will be available to you on an emergency basis. If not, you need to know who you can go to. You need to get your whelping supplies in; debby Jensen has a good website on this, just Google her and you will be b rought to her site. You have very little time to prepare and you need to go full speed ahead to get your finances in place, your vet in place, your whelping coach, and your supplies. Good luck with it all
