| Correspondance With Breeders/Potential Buyers My interest is peaked by the other thread about e-mailing w/ breeders. Am I doing something wrong? Here is an e-mail I wrote to a member of the American Maltese Association (AKC breed club for Maltese): Hi *******, I saw your name and e-mail on the AMA website. I am not planning to get a puppy for a few months, but I was wondering if you could give me some information as to your breeding program, how often you have litters, the parents weights and pedigrees, your dogs sizes and price estimates. I have a 6lb Yorkshire Terrier neutered male who is 7 months old. I'd really like to add a Maltese female to my home and have been searching for a breeder with whom I feel comfortable. I know that no weight can be guarnateed, but I am looking for a dog who is preferably smaller than my Yorkie -- around 5lbs being ideal; obviously, a sound temperment is veryimportant to me as well. Any information you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, Kristy I get in response: I ONLY HAVE A BOY ABOUT 6 MONTHS OLD THAT IS SMALL FOR SALE NOW, HIS PRICE IS 2000.00 AND HE HAS TO BE NEUTERED TO RECEIVE HIS PAPERS. I write back: I definitely want a female and I'd like to get have her when she's 12 weeks old because I've found that potty training is much easier if you start at a younger age. Thanks for your time. Am I being rude and forward? Why can't I get a decent response from any seemingly reputable breeder? Insight anyone? This has happened numerous times when I e-mail Yorkie breeders or Maltese breeders inquiring about a female to add to my family. I always get a crappy response.

| Kristy, I'm not a breeder but I think that your letter is appropriate. You were up front and telling them what your looking for, not a spur of the moment whim to buy a dog. And I also agree with you about the potty training. I know that some breeders never go to the bother of potty training just pee pad training and by 6 months it is really hard to change them, especially if you get them in the winter. I think that your letter should get better response, since you wrote to people who do advertise!...

| Kristy, If I receive and email from someone that asks about my breeding program and about me. I do get aggitated because I cover all of that on my website. I spend hours compiling all the information and posting on the web. I also spend money to keep the info out there. The least someone can do is READ IT!..Sorry, this happens to me A LOT!! I do give benefits of the doubt and usually reply like this: " How did you get my email? And you can visit my website to find all the answers to your questions. If you want to discuss a puppy further, please call me or send me your phone# I prefer phone conversations over email correspondence." I got a little off track, to answer your question specifically if I didn't have a website. I think our questions are approriate and your email shows you have done your research and have specifically selected that breeder. The reply was very brief and not the best IMO. If I don't have time to email (cuz I'm on here..lolol) I do suggest discussing by phone. I do get a little burned out on emails. I have free long distance so I can always call 'you' too. Your email is great! Don't get discouraged. Some breeders just don't do well with emails I guess. Good luck! |

| I don't think you are being rude or forward at all. You clearly stated what your interest was in your first letter. As a breeder, my response would have included the availability(or not) of pups at this time, the prospects concerning upcoming litters, a pasted copy of my information sheet with application questions, links to breed information and an offer to forward your request to other breeders that I know. My favorite requests for info include questions for me in addition to info about you that let me know you've been doing your homework, though I am not offended by the 'hi got any and how much?' ones either...the education process has to start somewhere for everybody. The requests that do bother me are the ones where people are looking to replace a pup that they had for a short time and lost for various health issues that never should have been bred. Their stories are heartbreaking and it upsets me that there are so many uncaring/ignorant breeders just looking to make a quick buck or people just breeding their pets without regard to consequences. I try to give people the information I would like to recieve if asking and generally much more than they actually ever wanted to know...lol! Just fyi..the 'nice' guys at www.pishpad.com are Maltese breeders, though I don't know if you'll get a better response or not. |

| Pm me. Peggy my handler has some beautiful maltese from a breeder in Kentucky that she is showing. I do not care for maltese and these girls are nice. I will get Charlene's information for you if you like. She is a very nice person. |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Kristy, I think that you sent very nice e-mails. You stated what your preferances were without being pushy or to forward. Breeder was short but to the point with her e-mail. Chances are, she just doesn't have the time...maybe works outside of the home...to give full answers or she's just blunt by nature. Let's see if she responds back and adds more to her reply.

| Thanks everyone. I'm not actively searching for a dog for right now (as I stated in my e-mail), but I just want to make sure that I am not doing anything wrong. Bump for more opinions?

| There could be many reasons this person replied to you in the way he/she did. Maybe, they just aren't good at putting things down in words, maybe they don't have time, maybe they're just jerks. Who knows?? But at least they DID respond! That's a lot more than I get sometimes from people wanting pics or info about mine. I send out pics to everyone who wants them. IF I get a reply, I'm happy. A lot of times, I e-mail them again to see if they got the first one. I for one, prefer the phone. You can tell a lot more by listening to people talk than you can by e-mail. S
