I got another dog in the house; safe to be around puppies? will they get eaten? My girl Pocky is due in a few more weeks. I was wondering if it's safe to have my other dog [her mother, another yorkshire] with us during the whelping process and after? Could she actually AID in the whelping or would she end up eating the puppies?

| Please keep babies away from other doggies even if it's grandma , Momma may get uncomfortable during birth ,feeding anything around her puppies anyway .She will be really on her toes and protective of her babies ,For safty and peace of mind all the way around separation is best .Let us know about the birth .Good luck

the mother and babies should be kept in a pen or crate away from other animals, drafts, children etc. I keep them in a 4x4 x pen., with food, water and a pee pad for mom, during the night, and a separate bed for mom if she needs to get away from the babies to cool down. The moms get very warm when nursing and sometimes need to get away. At about 3 weeks old, I put them in a bed that they can get out of. They learn fairly quickly to go out of the bed and to the pee pad to pee/poop. This makes for easier training because they learn from day one to go on the pee pad. They are not allowed around the other dogs until they are 6 weeks old.

just thought i would like to update on the whelp 3 days ago i noticed that my dog was gone when i woke up in the morning. i kept calling for her but she wasn't coming out. turned out she was hiding in my closet! so i put her in her whelping box because i wanted her to get accustomed to the area 24 hours prior before whelping. i went downstairs for 10 mins to use the computer and do some research, came upstairs and THERE WAS A BABY! at first i totally freaked because i wasn't present but she actually cleaned up the baby very fast and also took care of the umibilical cord [i didn't touch the mother at all]. 30 mins later, the second one slid out! i also allowed her to take care of that too...didn't touch anything. the mother was actually present during the whelping and stayed very close, laying on a pillow and watching. the dog/daughter giving birth didn't seem to mind and was very calm during the birthing process. i guess it's different for everyone!

wow, that's scary. but you're not far from the truth. 4 days before my dog's whelp, the mother was playing with the daughter but she got irritated and next thing i know there was some blood on the kitchen floor and apparently the daughter hit the mother's ear. nothing serious but it definitely scared me. the mother DOES get very curious and approaches the puppies. at one point she even ate the puppies' poop/cleaned them when the daughter ran outside to relieve herself. i'll follow your advice and find a way to keep them apart. i think i'd faint to see one of them lose an eye!
