| Mikki and Maximus tied!!! I'm hoping some of you experienced breeders can give me some advice. Mikki, 11 months and the 2nd time in heat and Max, 6 years old and neutered since 6 months, just tied. Mikki was very scared and tried to get away but he was swollen and they were stuck. After I realized what was going on I held both to keep them quiet until they could untie. Mikki was bleeding a little afterwards and I cleand her and put a diaper on her. I also looked Max over if any hair was stuck and if he was okay. Why is Max still mounting even though he is neutered? Can I be sure no damage is done to either one of them and there will be no puppies? Please don't bash me b/c Mikki is not yet spayed but she got the first time in heat when she was just 5 months and 3 weeks old, then we had to move and I thought we had more time since it was only 4 months since Mikki's last heat. |

| Wow I don't think most people would have even known this was possible. I'm sure it definitely caught you off guard. I have heard before that it was possible but I think those cases were makes that were bred before and neutered later in life. Well you shouldn't have to worry about puppies but she may have a false pregnancy. I wonder what causes some neutered males to do this?

| Sonja, I am sure you are really shocked . I have never heard of a male dog being able to have/hold an erection that would allow him to be able to tie. I wonder if he has a retained testicle? I would take your darling little Maximus to the vet to be sure that he is really truly neutered. Hopefully a breeder with more experience in this area will post their thoughts as well. We both have been around horses and I've seen geldings make some very valid attempts but I've never seen one "do the deed". |

| I had a friend up in New York who bred Golden Retrievers and it happened to her a couple of times. She had a neutered male who was a rescue who was able to tie with one of their females twice. Funny thing was that this particular female was very difficult for them to breed as she would not let any strange male dogs near her when she was sent to be bred. They always had to use AI with her. I guess she only liked her buddy. Or maybe she believed in practicing safe sex? |

| I have read on YT several instances where neutered males tied with females. While it is not really safe to let any dogs breed unsupervised I can't see that it has hurt anything now that the deed is done. I would just try to prevent it from happening again. When your female had her first heat was she bleeding? I have just never heard of a female coming in heat at 5 1/2 months. Like other mentioned, you have to make sure the male is neutered? Are you the person that had him neutered? Some males can appear to be neutered if they have undescended testicles and in that case they would still be able to impregnate a female. If you are planning on spaying your female, which I highly recommend if you are not intending to breed her, then I think now would be the time. I would wait about 4 weeks until she is fully out of heat and then have it done. |

| I know that this isn't funny for you, but I find humor in it. I'm not trying to be mean it just reminded me of an incident at my parents house. My mom has a Miniature Schnauzer that she had planned on breeding. Noel was going through her heat cycle and my brother had let her and our blue heeler cross (male) at the time out together. He was neutered at 6 months of age and at this particular time he was around 5 yrs. They ended up becoming tied. Don't know how this happened given the size of the dogs, but it did and we noticed (me, my mom, my sister) when we got home. My mom and sister freaked out and I just started laughing. I didn't think it was possible (we used cold water to seperate), but apparently it was. You have nothing to worry about if he is neutered (just kind of throws you off), but now that you have gotten moved in you should get your girls spayed. If Mikki is in heat that means your other girl is getting ready to go to! Keep an eye on them, and once your other gal is done with her heat set them up an appointment. Just take this with a grain of salt, and one day soon you'll look back on this and laugh, trust me!

| Thank you all so much for your responses. I sure was shocked and they scared the heck out of me especially since Mikki is 5.5 lbs. and Max is 12 lbs. ... They really took me by surprise b/c I didn't even know that Mikki was in heat, no bleeding, no exessive licking, nothing... We had Max neutured 1 week after we got him last year in August and planned on having Minnie and Mikki spayed end of October after Mikki reached 6 months of age. Well... beginning of September first Minnie, 11 months then, got in heat and then Mikki followed 2 weeks later at the age of 5 months and 2 weeks very much to our surprise. When they both were done we got word that we had to move in November and wanted to wait with the spaying b/c our vet in MD was about 20 miles away and we hoped to have one closer here in ABQ... Mikki is wearing a diaper now and I watch the two fellons like a hawk b/c Max tries to take Mikki's panties... uhm... diapers off... I'll call our vet tomorrow and ask if I have to bring the two in. Oh... Max is Minnies biological father and was used as a stud before we got him. We know of at least 4 litters he fathered... Last edited by Mitzis Mom; 03-08-2009 at 07:03 PM. |

| I thought you said in the first post that max was neutered at 6 months? If he was used as a stud and neutered as an adult that explains why he wanted to breed her better, although still not common for a neutered male to be able to breed

| I'm sorry if I wasn't clear in my first post... Max was neutered 6 months ago when he was 6 years of age. We had him for 6 days (got him Sunday the 23rd and got the first possible appointment on Friday the 29th of August.) Mikki got in heat around the 18th of September and turned 6 months on the 6th of October. She was bleeding and offering herself to Max. He was not really interested then but it might have been to close to his surgery... Well he sure was interested today!!! |

| OMG!!! Only the cactus kids would be so nawtee. Must have been something in the BBQ sauce today to get his juices flowing. Call the vet and let us know what he says. I feel bad for Mikki, she is such a sweet baby. M&F are still giggling. Shame on them.

| Since he has been used for stud before I am not surprised to hear it. I have a 13 year old dog, neutered from the age of 2 who has tied with two girls in season-- one of them a month after his 13th birthday. He had tied with a bitch in season when he was about 5 years old so from that point on we kept him away from the girls-- however, at 13 yrs I figured we were safe but apparently not. So we went back to keeping Ace away from the ladies... I don't see any need to take them into the vet unless she has discharge other than the initial bleeding. |

| My cousin has an 11 year old miniature poodle who was neutered 7-8 years ago, and never bred before that either (she had him since he was a pup, and she only had 2 male dogs ever), and he tied with her 8 month old shih tzu that was in heat. She called me freaking out! She said they were both completely terrified because they were stuck together. She took her in the following month to get spayed, but she never thought that it could happen. I have heard of it on more than one occasion. I don't think it's as uncommon as some might think!

| Update! So... I called the vet and everything should be okay... The funny thing was that we had guests over on Sunday for a BBQ and Max somehow managed to get Mikki out of her diapers and they tied again... Imagine my hubby holding the two horny teenagers in his arms and I'm trying to get Max' swelling down with ice cubes so they can 'untie'... Our guests were literally laughing tears and assured us that we really do everything to entertain them... Of course nobody had a camera handy... |
