Default I am 90% sure…well…maybe 95% sure

Hello yorkie breeders,

I am a new yorkie mom. My baby is 6 months old now, and it’s time to spay her. BUT, now that it’s time to make that decision I am contemplating if I SHOULD indeed spay her. I was not going to even entertain the thought of possibly breeding her, because I don’t know anything about breeding dogs, frankly this is my first dog EVER, and I thought all responsible pet/dog owners should JUST s/n their pets(if not a breeder), unless there is a health issue.

But now I am having second thoughts because I came to realize that she has the best temperament ever! Mostly through going to puppy classes and puppy socials with her, listening to other pet owners share their stories about their cutie pies’ mischievous deeds. I realized that my dog does not do any of those things that they are talking about, and also, my fiance who grew up with dogs (his aunt is a breeder) told me that I was very lucky to have such a good, loving dog, because he’s never met a dog so well behaved in his life. As well as getting a compliment from a dog trainer that said my baby is very well trained…(even though again, I don’t know that much about dogs, I just read as much as I can to make up for never having grown up with dogs)

Also, she is a cutie pie (I had a breeder ask me if I was going to breed or show my dog. (I said NOOOOO at the time, but now I am wavering, because she is such a good dog)

So I thought maybe the vet can help me with this tough decision. But my vet told me that he doesn’t know how to answer my question, because he said that my baby is a good looking healthy dog with a good temperament, and that if you didn’t breed dogs like that then what dogs DO you breed. But he said that for him personally, he would do something else with his spare time. I didn’t get the answer I wanted, so I push further, I said, well, I was ONLY going to consider breeding her if she will reach 5 lbs. I asked the vet if that was a good criteria. (Since my baby is only 2.7 lbs, and the vet said she will probably be up to 3.5lbs when she is full grown) I thought that she was too small to have babies, but for some reason, the vet said that it was ok for her to have babies, and that using 5 lbs adult weight is not necessarily a necessary criterion…

So he left me to wrestle with the decision…..

So…….I am 90% sure that I should spay her, but that other 10% is…. loud and strong, and forced me to at least get some breeders’ opinions on the issue. Can you offer me your thoughts, maybe pros and cons regarding this issue?

Some additional info that might be relevant:
1) I got her when she was 12 wks old, she weighed 1.7 lbs at the time of her initial check-up, and at the next vet appt. (3 wks later) she was 1.9 lbs, and then she kind of stayed at 2.7 lbs at her following visits (the following months)
2) Her parents’ are both AKC registered, I haven’t registered her, only because I didn’t feel necessary because I wasn’t thinking about breeding her
3) If I did end up breeding her…I would like to keep the babie(s) in the family. (Either keep to myself, or give to mom or sister who also would love to have a dog.)

I don’t even know why this is such a tough decision for me, probably because I feel that maybe my dog has really nice traits that should be passed on? But I am sure I am not the right person to be breeding her if she is to be bred, I think she is too small (and if it’s risky for a small yorkies to have babies, then I WILL NOT consider it), and I think someone with such little experience as myself probably should not entertain the idea of breeding dogs. Thank you for reading my LONG post

First off I am far from a pro breeder just so ya know, if I had a baby that small there is no way in this world that I would breed her!! Her just a tiny furbabie, way too small to breed, that is just my opinion. Good luck trying to decide, there are so many very knowledgable breeders on here, I'm sure they will help you make the right decision 'bout your baby girl.

I have to agree. She is WAY too small to breed. At that small of a size even a very experienced breeder would likely lose her having babies. Enjoy her and be very proud that you have such a great pet.

ooh la la... she's too small to be a mum. it's very risky and might break your heart if you gamble with it. stick with the 90% and you'll have more peace of mind.

You can visit my page and see my Champion sired girl that we had hoped to show and later breed. She is 9 months old 2 3/4 lbs. She is not going to make the cut for show/breeding. Pet only..
Thats just way too small to risk their life for a litter of pups is just not worth it.

I would spay your girl for sure

Without even addressing any of the other apsects of breeding, given your girls current size, I doubt she would make weight to be bred. Generally, 5 pounds in the minimum for a brood bitch and even there there are other aspects (like pelvic structure) that would have to be considered.

There are many factors that should be considered other than just the dog's temperament when deciding to breed.

Unfortunately for your family members who would be interested in one of her pups, looks like they will just have to envy you for having such a fabulous little girl all to yourself. But as an knowledgeable owner, you could always assist them in finding the perfect little Yorkie for them if they decide they want one.

well said Bama
my breeder has continually said that it is really cruel to put a female smaller than 5 lbs through a pregnancy much less labor and whelp....also with the structure...at 16 weeks of you cant see her hips on either side of your hand then she would probably be at a higher risk of not whelping naturally anyways.....my breeder had a female a few years ago that she kept out of a litter because she was the perfect example of what you want to carry on in the breed....well low and behold the little stinker stop growing at 6 months and to this day only weighs 2.7 lbs.....so no showing....no breeding ....and no spaying....cause of her wieght and heart murmor....he wont even put her all the way asleep to clean her teeth...just gets her calm.....she is a beauty ....but way too small.....IMO....just love that cute little thing.....

Thank you Deana, I definitely agree that a litter of pup is not worth risking her health and life. Thank you for sharing with me about your little girl, she is very pretty. I guess it's normal for some yorkies to stay so little.

I'm not a breeder, but I did wrestle with some of these same thoughts when it came time to neuter Marcel. I thought about it mostly bc others were telling me he should be a stud - so I posted in the Breeders Section like you did and it was SO HELPFUL! Putting aside the fact that he hadn't been professionally evaluated and I didn't have experience - the fact was that he has a champion line, he has/had this wonderful little face that people were saying I should "stud out" - so it did give me pause as to whether I was doing the right thing in neutering him. [I had ltd. reg. btw, but thought I could talk to my breeder if I was truly interested]

But, after hearing about how being a stud *might* change his personality - it just wasn't worth it to me. I wanted him as my sweet, loving boy - and I could've lost that if I allowed him to be a stud. Also, some people fly their studs here and there for lengths of time, and I honestly could not deal with that - I would worry every second. Also, my heart/passion is not in breeding overall - I didn't find myself reading anything and everything I could get my hands on about dog breeding, so that spoke volumes as to where my heart was.

So, I think it's important to ask yourself what you really want in your heart - just a sweet pet? Or, a commitment that is much bigger than that? To me, breeding is a GIGANTIC undertaking. I mean, just gigantic. It can be life and death - and that's scary. In the end, I decided I just wanted my sweet, furry, baby.

Bamafan...or Misty, thank you for the welcome This website is SOOO GREAT! I feel like I found a GEM!!! Thank you for also pointing out that there are much more to consider when thinking about breeding dogs...i obviously know too little

Smokey's mommy, thank you for sharing the tips from your breeder about what would be an ideal candidate for a breeding dog. Obviously, my Milu doesn't fit the qualification of being a mommy She will just have to be my little baby forever!

And THANK YOU Ann, for pointing out how big of a commitment it would be to breed a dog...I am really glad I came here to ask everyone's opinion, because I think there are many things that I didn't take into consideration...

Milu also wants to thank everyone for explaining to her mommy how dangerous it is, and what a bad idea it is to breed her.

Well what good mommy wouldn't be nervous? Just know that you are doing what is best for HER. I'm sure you will have a tougher day than she will.

Wishing Milu a speedy recovery and you some peace at mind. Be sure and post up how everything went and how she is doing after you have her back in your loving arms.

Thank you so much! i took milu to the vet this morning, it was really hard handing my baby to them for surgery, but like you said, it's the best for her. i brought milu her bed, her piglet, and her blanket which i slept with last night, so she can smell her mommy while she stay at the vet today. hopefully it will help keep her from being too sad and lonely. i can call the vet at 2:00pm today to find out how she is doing. i am really scared, but i've been trying to not think about it.

she was 2.7 lbs last time we visited the vet (she was 6 months old) , i thought she would be heavier now because she is 7 months old and she's been eating fine, but the vet told me today milu weighs 2.6 lbs
i wonder if it's because she was went to the groomer recently and had her hair trimmed? i don't know, i hope she's ok...
