| Eclampsia My 3 yr old yorkie is about to give birth to her 3rd litter of pups. The last litter she had 4 pups and got eclampsia on the 10th day after whelping. Luckily I was able to get her to the vet quickly and she was ok after removing the puppies for several days. I did not want to breed her again to but she came in heat while being boarded with my male while I was on vacation. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions about prevention of eclampsia for this litter. Any help at all would be great! |

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | From what I understand, you should NOT feed your female any extra calcium PRIOR to whelping, but be sure she gets plenty of it afterwards. There is a recipie for whelping pudding on some threads here that is great to use after she whelps. Just to a search and it should come up. I believe there is also a recipe on the same thread for something to feed the mama immediately after she finishes whelping to help regain her strength. I have also heard opposite about the feeding extra calcium while pregnant, but I tend not to agree with that. Given to much will make her body think that it does not have to make as much on its own; leading to the eclampsia. I've also heard that if they get it once, they are prone to getting it again????? Don't know if there is truth to that or not. Good luck with you little mama; please keep us posted!

| If she had eclampsia the last time , there is a great possibility that she will have eclampsia the next litter . Be sure to work closely with you vet . |

| I have had a bitch with Eclampsia, it is no fun and so dangerous to the bitch...I did breed her again...I used Calsorb daily from the time of whelping until all pups were weaned...It is very important not to stop the treatment or you are sure to have problems with Eclampsia...The body is depending on you to provide the calcium... Calsorb is bitter and the dogs hate it (I did taste it...YUCK)...But the benefit was priceless!

| Thank you so much for the feedback. I have ordered the Calsorb from a website and hoping it will be in any day as we are due Sept 22nd. I have done some research and I know it says to give 1-3 cc's. Trixie is about 6 pounds, not sure yet how many puppies, but I was just wondering if anyone knew the approximate dose to give her? I am also going to help supplement the pups feedings. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas about this. If I am giving the calsorb do I need to supplement? Thank you so much! |
