From what I understand, you should NOT feed your female any extra calcium PRIOR to whelping, but be sure she gets plenty of it afterwards.
There is a recipie for whelping pudding on some threads here that is great to use after she whelps. Just to a search and it should come up. I believe there is also a recipe on the same thread for something to feed the mama immediately after she finishes whelping to help regain her strength.

I have also heard opposite about the feeding extra calcium while pregnant, but I tend not to agree with that. Given to much will make her body think that it does not have to make as much on its own; leading to the eclampsia. I've also heard that if they get it once, they are prone to getting it again????? Don't know if there is truth to that or not.
