| someone please help me Hi all, my dog has just gave birth to 2 puppies and she has lost her appetite. Am not sure if it is because we lost 1 puppy last week. He was tiny and rejected food. I have some questions and hope the experts can help me on this. 1. I have much difficulty coaxing the mum to eat. Basically, she only eats what she likes. She does drink water etc.I am feeding whatever we have -wet food, meat stick -her favourite snack to coax her to eat. So far, it has worked. However, we are worried she is not getting enuf nutrients. We have since went to the vet and was prescribed some antibodies and val syrup(vitamin). We are feeding her those. What should we do? I have been taking her temperature twice a day as well as we r worried abt milk fever. So far, her temperature is normal 38.3 to 38.7 degree celsius. 2. Also, when should new born puppies defecate? daily? because one of the pups does not do this everyday even though we have stimulated like many times. How often should they defecate? The other pup is also experiencing the same problem but at least when she stimulate her three times or so, she will poo. Pee is not a problem, plenty from both of them. They are not crying excessively as we were worried abt air in their belly. Mum is nursing them well and their belly are big and round. Sorry for the long post. Your response is greatly appreciated. |

| Sandy, I am sorry no one saw this sooner but I am sure we can help. There is a recipe post several places on here for whelping pudding. I will try to find that for you. Many times the moms have to be hand fed the first few day but after that their appetite usually picks up. The momma should be licking and cleaning the pups and they eat the poo so you might just be missing it. Just try to keep enticing the mom to eat. I have never had a real picky eater but I am sure some can help you with more suggestions. Best wishes for your mom and her babies. |

| You can try canned dog food also. It's usually more tempting for them. Then you can switch her back after a few days or whenever you decide. Mom is more than likely diapering the pups and nothing is left behind so you'll not know like Barbara said. They'll cry more when their constipated and their belly will be big and tight. You can use a slither cut off of a glycerin suppository and insert in their anus (hold with finger to keep it in for a bit). |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | If she'll eat yogurt, or cottage cheese, I would suggest those for the extra calcium. We also made her boiled white chicken meat and rice. When my Gellica had her puppies, she was eating about 3 times her normal amount of food! As far as the puppies defecating - yes, they should be every day, but you may not see it because the Mom cleans up after the pups. She'll eat it because it is their instinct to do so. The reason why is to prevent any predators from finding her "nest".

Susan, I'm like Barbara all my Yorkies eat so very good that I've not had one picky eater so I can't help you in that department at all, as far as the peeing and pooing I feel like Barbara does she does lick it all up as fast as they do it or at least my Tif did and you could just be missing it. I hope things go better for you and I'm so so sorry you lost your little one, my heart goes out to you. Lee | |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | My Cricket did that too after her first litter. She lost 2 of them. I soaked her dry food then when it was soft, I added baby food chicken and nutra cal and fed her with a syringe three times a day, so I knew she was getting enough vitamins for her and her babes, I also gave her calcium tabs daily. I still would offer her food, but would syringe her if she refused. After a couple of weeks she started coming around. |

| thank you all or your replies. You guys really saved my day!!!! Yes, my lil mummy rascal ate yesterday when we cooked steamed ham and chicken for her. This morning, she ate just a little of her kibbles. We are giving her some fish treats. She rejected ice cream but I have yet to start on yogurt. I am so happy that she is eating now. As for the puppies pooping, i've checked that their bellies are not tight and big. Also, they are not crying very much either, except when they are hungry and mummy keeps licking their rear area, so i can't be sure and i think mummy has eaten all their poo! Because my instinct tells me that if the babies are eating well and not crying as much, they should not be constipated right?? Again, I appreciate all your responses and am really glad that I am a member of this wonderful forum!!! Cheers. |

| Sandy, I am glad to hear the momma is starting to eat more. I am not positive about giving her ham, I have heard that is not good for dogs. I know the chicken is good. Chopped up boiled eggs would be good or a scrambled egg. Most likely you don't have to worry about the babies being constipated at this age. With my litters I usually don't see any poop at all until the pups are 3 weeks old and even then I have to catch it before the momma sees it because the momma usually eats it as fast as it comes out. I start weaning process at around 4 weeks. I grind up some dry puppy food in a blender and just put down the ground up dry food in a small bowl and the pups will come over and start licking it. Be sure to leave out a small bowl of water also. Weaning should be a slow process where they can eat small amounts of food in the beginning while still nursing momma. As they get older they will start eating more dry food and nurse off momma less. During the transition from momma to eating solid food you need to monitor their bowel movement more. Sometimes they will get constipated or get loose stools. You should check their bottoms regularly then. We would love to see pictures when you get a chance. | thank you bjh! Yes, I will take off the ham, she loves chicken though and we are all glad that she is eating now. I have been reading up on the net as well for weaning the puppies. Will monitor their bowels more and many thanks for your expertise and advice. The puppies are now 9days old. Will post pictures when I download from the camera. |
