My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Macey's rear teat is hard Ok, Macey's temp is 101.9 One of her rear teats has hardness inside. It is not red, and does not seem painful to the touch. Should I be concerned? I've never had this before. |

| I just went through this with Jewels between her back two teats it was getting hard and lumpy not red and hot and no fever.I took her in and it was the start of mastitis if you have amoxi you can start her on it now and call yoru vet and ask him or her what they think .I started Jewels on amoxi and my vet switched her to Baytril. Her teat is soft and normal now. I put pups on to nurse it more and warm packed it and that did not work I tried this for a day and a half before I took her in. | No need for concern yet. If you can get a pup to nurse on the harder teat. If it's too tight to get a pup to latch on put a warm compress on it for a minute than try to express a bit of milk from it. Just a bit of expression should soften the teat enough to get a pup to latch on. The pup will empty the teat bringing mom relief.

| She just may be overproducing milk right now...When this happens to one of my girls I always gently express a tad of milk out of the ducts...Just enough to relieve the pressure to prevent an infection...Make sure she is not jumping over a whelping box edge and hitting her belly on it...That will also cause a problem with Mastitis... Keep taking her temp a couple times a day and that will also indicate a problem...

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Should I mix the fish mox and give as a precaution? The amoxi won't hurt the pups? |

| Personally I'd hold off on the antibiotics. The body is stronger if allowed to fight on it's own. Keep an eye out for redness, soreness, lethargy, or a temp. It's uncomfortable when you get engorged but not necessarily a problem if the teat is nursed on. That's one thing I remember from nursing my own babies.

| If your vet is back you could call with the symptoms and he could tell you to treat or not to. Dont know how he is about stuff like that ? My vet if I call with symptoms and he thinks it needs to be treated he will tell me to go ahead and treat if i have the antibiotics here. No temp today can be a big temp by tomorrow if it is a problem just starting. |

| Breny, I always give mine the fish mox at the first sign of mastitis. It is perfectly safe. I usually just give it for a couple of days until the hardness is gone. The warm compresses will help too. |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | I think you said 8 dropers full of water mixed to 3 caplets to last 3 days, correct? And give one dropper full morning and night? |

My Tiny Treasures Donating Member | Macey is normally almost 5 1/2 so I won't give a full dropper. We have a soccer game, is it ok to give it to her and leave her alone for an hour, or should I wait till I'm back? (I'm such a horrible worry wart!) |
