| Please help! This is my first posting on here... I don't know where else to go. My dog "Honey" had to have an emergency C-section on Friday. She had 3 pups. The vet spayed her during the c-section. Now, she does not have any milk! The pups all weighed 6 oz at birth- and now it is day 4 and they have only gained about 1 oz each!! I can not get them to take milk out of a little bottle, and when I use a syringe- they gag and choke. Meanwhile, they continue to try to nurse, and poor Honey has bruised nipples from all the suckling! Is there something I can do to help her milk come back in? If you have any suggestions, please let me know. |

| I use 1 teaspoon of cottage cheese, and a pinch of red raspberry leaves(you get this at the health food store) works great to get the milk going. They get this every day until the pup are 3 weeks old. The raspberry leaves are also very good for making the urtrus(sp?) contract back to the normal size, and also acts as a painkiller when momma goes into labor. I really hope everything works out well with the pups/

| I know another breeder that had the same thing happen to her. She said she let the vet spay the mom at the same time she did the c-section and the mom never go milk. It is my understanding that the mom will never get milk after being spayed. Fortunately, the breed I knew had a friend that had a Yorkie that was able to act as a surrogate mother. It is critical that you get help immediately. Maybe someone in your area has a little dog that just had a small litter and can take them on. You need someone to teach you how to tube feed, maybe your vet can help. I will be praying for you and your little babies. |

| I recommend you read this article. It recommends a platex nurser and has other useful information: http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenl...t/feeding.html |

| I had one with a c-section/spay and she did not have near as much milk as her previous litter. I suggest you keep those babies nursing, as it places a demand and will increase milk supply. And weigh them often. Sometimes, if they keep mom drained you won't get any milk out. But the puppies know how to get it. They'll cry like crazy if they're hungry. Mother's pudding recipe is really good for this. Lots of calcium and milk. You can find the recipe in a search. I also give my moms a small bowl of milk, cottage cheese etc in addition to aid in milk supply if one is low. I also recommend red raspberry leaves and Fenugreek. Susan |

| pups Are the pups crying and fussing...milk lets down as they nurse and they are suckling and stimulating her...are they warm and quiet, active and shiny, (pick up the neck skin to see if it snaps back in place, if it sticks it they are dehydrated)..they are no doubt getting enough...but have the vet check if you are worried. Puppies who are hungry, cry and fuss..move around looking for milk...or they lay there are barely move, sickly looking..best wishes |

Luv my 7 Furkids Donating Member | Mine had to have c sec for first and last litter, she was spayed at the same time, her milk was already trying to come out when she started labor but the vet gave me some liquid medicine I gave to her in a syringe, and it made the milk come down in large quantities. She didnt have any problem after that, let me go see if the bottle is still in the cupboard.........ok back its called Metoclopramide Syr. I cant remember if its what they gave her for pain or she was peeing all the time and I was worried she might be getting a bladder inf. but I only gave it to her a couple of days and stopped when everything fell into place. Call your vet and ask at least. good luck |

| Thank you, Thank You, Thank You!! Thank everybody for all the wonderful information. I do have a vet appointment today at 2:00. I just couldn't sleep last night when I posted the message because I was soo worried about them. The puppies actually look pretty good. They are active and spunky. They aren't crying. But it is day 4 and they have only gained an ounce. I have been giving Honey cottage cheese everyday- I will definitely ask the vet about metoclopramide. I am not very happy with the vet not telling me that if she was spayed that she would lose her milk!! Why wouldn't he have known this and warned me?!? I continue to TRY to supplement the puppies with puppy formula- but they won't have anything to do with it. The nipple I have on this bottle is hard and crappy- I will check out that website on nursing supplies and see if I can find something closer to the real thing for them. I will keep everyone posted on their progress. By the way- there are 2 girls and 1 boy. Is there anything out there more adorable than a yorkie puppy?!?? I don't think so!! Thank you again! |

| I was just wondering what the vet said, and according to my vet they do not recommend using the bottle they feel that, a syringe is much better for new borns at least until they are 2 weeks old. I hope the babies are doing fine, as well as momma!

i have never had a problem at all with a spayed mama having milk. I had two c-sections and spayed and they each raised a littler of five fat babies. | |

| Don't forget, the first day they'll usually lose a little weight. As long as they're gaining steady and not crying, they're fine IMO. Good luck I hope everything goes well at the vet for your peace of mind. |

| That is very good news. I was basing my information on what happened to that one lady. I just hope I am never in that situation. |
