Hi everyone! I just found this amazing site and am so thankful because I have to admit, I'm a bit nervous about bringing home our tiny new baby girl, Adie, on Saturday. Born on March 16th, she will be 7 weeks old. We are traveling approx. 3 hours to get her (leaving my teens at home so to not overwhelm her) and I am looking for advice for these first few weeks when she is so very tiny. what puppy food is best? Best way to introduce her to our 39lb standard female (spayed) poodle? We want to potty train her outside but is it safe? If not, am I sitting myself up for disaster by starting her on potty pads? And finally, do you guys think she could safely fly by mid June? I want to travel with my h[U]usband on a business trip and think she would be better with me than here with our three teens and poodle and grandmother.

That is a really young pup!! Can the breeder keep your pup for a few more weeks? It s preferable for Yorkies to stay with their moms until they are 12 weeks old. Their small size makes them vulnerable to hypoglycemia, which can cause seizures and eventually death. Not trying to scare you but you will need to be constantly very vigilant if you get you new pup so soon.

I have tried to get him to keep her another few weeks and his travel schedule does not allow for it. So, Adie is coming home Saturday and I am quite nervous. I bought a nice carrier for her and she will simply go with me if I have to go out. (protected from the public of course) I have cleared my schedule as much as possible so we will be home the majority of the time. I totally agree with what you are saying though and if it was me, those puppies would stay with momma until 12 weeks of age. Thanks for your input.

I have a 7 week old that I've hand raised. I could not imagine her leaving at that age. Yorkie babies are so fragile. I cant wrap my head around someone breeding them and not taking the time to raise them to 12 weeks. My last litter were still nursing from their mother at 7 weeks.

My girl is on solid foods but not hard food yet. A puppy that age must eat at more frequent intervals than an older pup. Make sure she eats 4-5 times a day and have water at all times. If she's eating hard puppy food, make sure its available all the time. Mine is still on gruel...on the thicker side, but its still gruel. If you cant get her to eat, try mixing some gerbers baby food--chicken or beef flavors. Sometimes that's what I have to use to get my girl to eat. You can also give her diluted goats milk or a good milk replacer for puppies.

Make sure you keep her area warm and free of drafts. They can get sick if they get too cold. She's gonna miss her littermates so be sure to provide a warm blanket and some stuffed toys to snuggle with.

Your going to have to teach her bite inhibition since she doesn't have her littermates & mother to teach her. I've seen some good videos on the net regarding that.

My little one is very tiny for her age so hopefully yours is a little bigger and she can eat dry food well. Be sure to get yours to a vet asap and get a stool sample checked.

I agree with the above poster. I have a litter that is 7 weeks today and can't imagine them leaving for new homes yet. They aren't even weaned yet. I feed them moistened ground up kibble a few times a day, but they also still nurse. They re also at the age where they have just gotten teeth and sure do like to use them....their mom and littermates will start to teach them bite inhibition over the next few weeks. Puppies aren't usually great eaters yet atb7 weeks, plus the added stress of going to a new home can make feeding even more difficult. Watch closely for signs of hypoglycemia. Don't let the puppy overplay as that can bring on hypoglycemia also...

Should I supplement with milk from the pet store? I purchased the gel to go in her mouth at the first sign of hypoglocemia. I also got her a stroller so she doesn't have to be left alone when I need to run errrands. Of course our 1st stop will be the vet on Monday morning. Thanks everyone-please let me know if you think of anything else.

Prior to bringing home my 7 1/2 week old yorkie silky mix 5 years ago, I purchased "Yorkies for Dummies", "Yorkshire Terrier: Your Happy Healthy Pet" and "Your Yorkshire terrier's Life:Your complete guide for raising your Pet from Puppy to Companion". I found all 3 to be helpful. I was very lucky and had no hypoglycemia issues. It sounds like you have a plan in place to keep her closely monitored & that is fantastic. Of course, no letting her touch the outside ground or any other dogs or people who have dogs until all vaccinations are completed. Good luck & looking forward to pictures!

What about shots? microchip? Can't put puppy on lawn--danger of parvovirus. Don't let the puppy get on the ground?

I would not let a 7 week puppy leave my home--even to go another breeder.

All such good advise. I am not a breeder but I do know how important those first 12 weeks are to a new born Yorkie and a good part of it, I don't think was mentioned was the vast amount the mother teaches her pups in that time.

I can see you are trying your best to work around this very difficult situation, yet I wonder about this breeder and her ethics.

I'm so happy to report that the last 2 1/2 weeks with Addie have been wonderful. She is truly a special little girl and she has added so much fun to our household. She is 9 weeks now and the vet says she is a healthy, happy little girl. I take her on short outings where others won't have access to her yet due to her age and she loves her stroller.
Yes, she was so young when we had to bring her home and I kept a constant eye on her. I would not recommend bringing home a pup so young but I am so glad we didn't go with a different breeder because I am head over heels with my lil AddieAddie 7 weeks.JPG

I would be careful reputable breeders won't let there pups go home until 12 weeks......
