I don't usually get into this, but I have a 'gold' yorkie. Both parents were the standard color. After being completely and thoroughly bashed, I decided to check into it a little further.

There is a difference between a 'gold' yorkie and a 'chocolate' yorkie. The gold has black eye-rims and a black nose. The chocolate has a liver-colored nose and liver-colored eye-rims.

I have heard that health issues can be a factor in these pups, so I decided to get in touch with the yorkie doctor associated with AKC and ask him. He said that there are not health issues related to the 'gold' coloring, but I shouldn't breed him if I want to stick to the AKC color standard. He told me that it was just a recessive gene causing the overall gold color.

Sooooo... while some may not want to call my YORKIE a yorkie, I don't know what else he could be????? A rose by any other name is a rose.

Now about breeding them... There are definitely people out there who love the look of these 'golds' and would love to own one. The pups that I did have from him before getting him fixed, were sold as pet quality only and at a reduced rate. What I don't want to happen is for an unethical breeder to get a hold of one of my pups and start breeding for the money only! People who breed yorkies with AKC registration, should stick to AKC standard colors only.

I did keep one of his daughters and will probably breed her (maybe once), and sell the pups as pet quality without papers. They really are beautiful pups!!! According to this vet, I would not be selling a defective puppy....

Does this make me a bad person?

P.S. If you would like the name of the yorkie doctor, just pm me and I'll send it to you. Hope I didn't step on anyone's toes....

Exactly. Breeding off-colored dogs the way you guys are saying doesn't sound like refining the breed.


Back in the day, they bred several different breeds to create a better breed. Not to just throw in a color they felt was cool or pretty, or whatever.

Please elaborate on the difference. I love that you can justify what you feel is correct for the breed standard by calling it, "refining".

Those flaws that are proven to cause health issues, such as albinos, are not the issue here. There is no proof that goldens or partis have any greater health risks.

The key word there is MAY, the other half of that equation is it also MAY NOT. Show me where there is proof that goldens or partis have any greater health issues than traditionals. You're making generalizations and lumping all off colored yorkies into one group.

I find this statement very interesting. People will accept the Biewer because, Germany allowed them to develop them into a breed of their own. Yet the parti color, having come about under the exact same circumstances, is considered a genetic defect that is causing the ruination of the entire yorkshire terrier breed. How do you even justify that comment?

Gene mutations can cause all sorts of problems like the ones listed above and worse.

This is not proof, this is an unproven hypothesis.

Is it your preference to have the 3-7lb Yorkie or the 15lb. Yorkie that is what started this breed???

you guys are not bettering the breed......all breeders are held by rules of ethics by the ytca which you are not complying with when you breed off color dogs. akc and ytca would not be very happy with your breeding ethics

On very rare occasions, a breeder will have a puppy born with a color anomaly.

promote these deviations as being desirable or rare.

That is not proof, it is still just an hypothesis. And what did you expect the YTCA to say. I want proof from a veterinary study.

BUT I have to ask here you state that you fixed the pups and sold them as pets because you did not want an unethical breeder getting them and people that breed should breed to the standard only.. I was on board and thought "well that is reponsible" she learned from her experience and research".
THEN you write you will breed his daughter and sell them as "pets". There must be a reason. You do not think anyone should breed for anything but breed standard but it is ok for you to breed this girl...Why?

So what you're saying is, you'd LIKE to take that risk that a Yorkie MAY be ill, just so you can get that adorable color you can't live without? Having a potentially ill Yorkie that is a nice non-standard color is so much better! In general, any off-colors are a cause of a genetic mutation and are a cause of concern. Any breedings of dogs with genetic mutations have to be approached cautiously.

Biewers are marketed as a different breed. They're not called, "Parti-colored Yorkies", they have been recognized by a kennel club and have their own distinction. There was a lot of research into the possible effects of this mutation and everything was done selectively and carefully.
