Great advise...thanks for all your helpful information!

As a person interested in showing, I started out 2 years ago visiting dog shows and visiting with breeders. I made the decision to go with a Silky because of a particular breeder I met.
We met at my first dog show and as time passed and I was ready to purchase and had the time to commit to showing, they were the ones I went to for a pup. But it was not that easy. I had to go through an approval process - because they want to know that I am someone they want to work with over the next several years (at least). And then the purchase was with a co-owner contract that has very specific terms on breeding. I have no problem with any of this....as these are people that are willing to dedicate some of their time to train me on the world of showing.
Every since I purchased Captain, I have regularly been to shows with them to watch and learn. I can not tell you how fortunate I feel to have been allowed this opportunity!! They could have easily not sold me Captain and instead showed him to a championship themselves. But instead they want to find those people that have a heart for their breed and are willing to dedicate themselves to improving the breed. Trust is a very large part of our relationship and show be with any breeder and potential buyer!

So for those interested in showing, you must be willing to invest the time to build relationships with breeders!! It takes time and should never, ever start with a conversation about wanting to start a breeding program. The breeding part should follow after showing the dog to their championship.

JMHO.....I don't mean to offend anyone, I just know what I have already invested in this process and Captain has not even had his first show. (But will one week from tomorrow!!) So I certainly can understand how those that have invested many, many years must feel!!

Yes and you were willing to start with a male which most reputable breeders will start a novice there. At one time, reputable breeders may have been willing to start a novice with a female but the novice didn't bother to learn anything and proved their intent was puppies -- by breeding it and never went near the show ring once they got their hands on a puppy. And bred it too often and too long.

I also think the pictured puppy is beautiful. and if you have enough to get 2 of what your looking for then i would get him just for a beautiful pet~

I thought the dog was pretty too and all the poor OP was asking was should she get him because of his dark head and it has evolved into all this. She vaguley mentioned show/breeding then went on to say she was getting him but what did we think of his dark head. WHEWWWWWWWWWWWW. i ain't even going to say anymore because I am a breeder who has never seen the show ring, don't intend to as far as I know, might someday have champion lines and many well known names on my pedigrees . I have sold my puppies to people that are planning on TRYING them in the ring and it's not been by me telling them to. In fact, it's the other way round because I wouldn't know a show dog from any other nice one. I know I have seen some show dogs, I wouldn't buy and wondered why in the world is that dog in the ring. because of all that, when the threads take this direction about who should sell, who should breed and etc I tend to take this stuff way too personal. i usually try to stay out of these threads because I would say way too much since I feel like I am one of those being talked about in these threads and it could turn ugly. i happen to think there are a lot of knowledagable breeders and well respected breeders that are not show people and have just as much right to breed as the show people do. you all have to forgive me tonight. I have already said more than I intended . I am turning off for tonight.:)

OMG! Just got on this morning this thread has gotten crazy! Thank you D for getting back to what this thread was about. I respect all of your advice, but could you please stop tag teaming me! I didn't intend on ruffling any of your feathers. I never claimed to know anything about showing just wanted to learn and said that MANY times. If it takes over a year to find a good show dog/pup then why not start now? I am willling to take the time and do research first (said that too) I have nothing but time and I am not in any hurry. And yes, it's sad but true that if you waive enough cash in front of some of these show breeders, then they will "hand over" their dogs to you. I am not willing to do that.
So back to the original question, Because this is in the yorkies for sale or wanted forum, I am looking for a show potential male if anyone has one or possibly thinks they will have one and wants to help a potential show mom by mentoring me, let me know! Bless you all and have a great day!

Big Momma......hummmmmm ..not sure where in this thread you felt that you were being "tag teamed". but, I guess we all have our own opinion.....:confused: Regardless.....I have been following this thread....and felt it was a pretty informative thread.......You asked a question....and left it open to ALL to respond....whether they were Show Breeders or Not......and you got a mixed response.....although, the show people were explaining to you that it would take a lot of work, which I might add you WERE willing to do......which is great.....as far as I am concerned!!!

Maybe the location of the thread is what threw everyone...although like you said.....you wanted to get started.....to purchase a "show potential male", which is why you posted here......and that is quite alright......not sure if you were expecting someone to tell you where you would get one....but, you were trying to get started....the Show people were telling you how to get there if you were interested in showing....and that is usually why someone buys a "show potential" puppy.....although, I have been known to be gullible.....and some people may have ulterior motives for just breeding a show potential puppy, and have no intention of showing him.....which, I personally feel is a SHAME. But, hey that is MY opinon......

So, again back to your question.......your process is correct. Go to shows, talk to who ever will talk to you, learn ALL you can about quality, coat, movement, diseases, etc.....you will need to know this when you show and when you breed...period......Then find a friend, mentor that will answer your questions, and will not think you are crazy with all the weird things you will come up to talk about.......I know this because I am constantly asking a couple of YT'ers a LOT of questions ....that are easy for them, but hard for me to comprehend.....

I am just touching on a MINIMUM of what your ONE little question opened up.....it is so much more than......."looking for a show male puppy".....does that make sense????

You said you were looking for a show potential male. You have to know HOW to find one and WHO to deal with and the reasons for it, IF you are indeed serious. If you aren't that's your choice.
The advice you got regarding buying show dogs was given by people who do show their dogs and know why we do what we do. If you don't want to take knowledgable advice, that's up to you.

Bigmommma you missed another point. YOu won't waive enough cash in front of a REPUTABLE show breeder who has spent many years showing and championing their own dogs, who will sell you whatever with no contracts.
There is a HUGE difference.

I did leave this thread open to all who wanted to reply. I just didn't like that I was left feeling guilty for even the thought of showing a dog or wanting to buy one that I could show. I felt like I was given more of a lecture rather than advice. Not by all but by some. I love all you ladies and I am so thankful that you are here to help. I'm not asking for sugar coated advice either, just want to be taken seriously as for I am serious.

I will throw in my possibly unwelcomed 2 cents and 'observation'.

I for one, appreciate reading what I do. Personally, I don't see where this thread went down hill or anyone should have been offended. No one was naming anyone and the show breeders/exhibitors input is valid and interesting to read. I can understand and agree with what is said based on.....1). These people intentions are improving/preserving the breed, 2). They have been there and done that. 3). The show world is a small one and it is only with ethics, integrity, and honesty that anyone could possibly survive.

If I had put my life, years, sacrifices, money, research etc into this....I too would love to share my experiences and the 'real deal' when it comes to this. I am green as can be about all this.......but I am young and willing to learn. I don't spend my time on here just killing time...........I appreciate the invaluable information I get here. No one is born knowing and it is only through experience and time that one gets 'there'. If you are lucky enough to know one that is already 'there' to teach you and share their knowlege then what a blessing (provided ethics/integrity/trust is always present). If not, then those who are already there can take it to the grave with them. Not everyone is willing to 'educate' others. Again, I appreciate eveything I read and learn on here.........and that option should be there. No one should feel that they cannot post their life experiences or 'honest truth'.........everyone else should either move on or wear the shoes if it fits them.

This is the internet and it is very easy to get offended (we all have been there). If you decide to breed or show.....you are more prone to it since the subject is always an ongoing one. I guess everything comes with a price tag.

I hope you (or anyone) take this the wrong way, but I have always found that a clean conscious and feeling run side by side. If one knows in their heart that they are doing things right and are at peace with themselves...........they could give a crap what others have to say. It's easy to just brush it off and move on.

As a reader, I see nothing wrong with this thread. Everyone was curteous and respectful, no names were mentioned and no one was bad-mouthed. I am sure the possibilty exists that there are members here who are hurting the breed or are destined to be BYB (why would I think any different.....it's the net). No one should get offended if the shoe doesn't fit. ;)


I am not a breeder or show. This is my mere observation/opinion. Also, I don't expect people flaming me or keep quoting me after this and getting all testy. I am here to learn and don't have time to 'fire away'. My PM always has space though and if anyone wants to.......please feel free.

you have been very respectful:thumbup: :thumbup: . I always tend to take these threads personal because I am just getting started and have such a good bunch of dogs. I guess it goes back to when i first joined here being told over and over that I had no business breeding because i do not show. Some people were downright rude. I feel that I am too old to begin to show. i am sixty now and it take so many years, I know i would never be able to finish one at my age.

You took the words right out of my mouth. I know EXACTLY what you mean and share your view point 100%! (This is in no way at all directed at any of this thread's posters--just deja vu I suppose from the same subject matter taking an ugly turn before.)
