| I have never seen a black and tan adult Yorkie. They are black and tan when born but they change colors as they get older. Most of them have blue, tan, gold, silver blend as adults and some constantly keep changing until they are full grown. Oh...with the exception of one pictured Yorkie. She looks dark in color and is gorgeous but she is not the norm from what I've seen over the years.

| I have seen a black and tan adult a few different times. I think you just have to keep looking !! I perfer the darker coat as well. My puppy was really black until about a month ago and now is turning more blue/gray.. but I did love her dark coat!

| The reason you are having such difficulty is because most reputable breeders breed to the standard; dark steel blue and gold. A black and tan coat is indicative of a soft or cotton coat, not correct in texture or color.

| Mine turned 2 years old 01.Oct, and she is a cotton-coated black/tan coat. She still looks like a "teddy bear" puppy. Not sure why black/tan is undesirable, as she is gorgeous & still beautifully puppy-like. |

| It's not that is undesirable, just not to standard & a fault. There are pet owners that do love it. However, it does mat easier and harder to maintain.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | My boy is black and tan. He has a wonderful coat and never matts. I can go longer without grooming him than most. He is 3 and I have never had to cut him. I have cut his topknot some just so I could see his eyes. He has a beautiful floor length coat. I don't consider it a cotton coat. This is not the clearest picture but all I have right now on this computer. jazzy.jpg

My Murphy is black and tan and I think he has a modified coat. It's soft to the touch, definitely not silky, but he doesn't matt often. My Tate is also black and tan and he has never had a matt, or even a small tangle. I can go weeks without brushing him and he still never has a tangle. I wish all of mine had coats so easy to take care of!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | 2 of mine have the black and tan and their coats are miserable to care for. The other one has a silky coat that is dark but has silver in it. I was just at a dog show in Chicago and you can sure tell a coat that is to the standard-beautiful!!

Our Mistletoe was a classic black and tan... and just turned 2... her entire head is now tan/gold! Her puppies were classic black and tan but one of them (the male) grew "blue" all over his face and top of his head - just like his sire - which between 2.5 and 3 yrs old he also went entirely tan/gold on his head. It's really strange! The rest of their bodies are still classic black and tan but the heads are now completely tan... I'm wondering if there will be more changes coming! | |
