My Murphy is black and tan and I think he has a modified coat. It's soft to the touch, definitely not silky, but he doesn't matt often.
My Tate is also black and tan and he has never had a matt, or even a small tangle. I can go weeks without brushing him and he still never has a tangle. I wish all of mine had coats so easy to take care of!
