What's the difference between Gold and Tan?

I was wondering that too. We register our puppies when they still have their black and tan puppy coat. How are we supposed to know what color they'll be when they mature?

i need to register kiele and this thread just brought that to my attention when one of yall said the AKC form says tan and gold seperated.

I find this very interesting.
I always thought Destiny was tan and Tigger was gold.

So then I have it backwards? Destiny is considered gold and Tigger is tan?

Here is a picture of the two. Destiny is the one on the left.



As for registering them, I think you can change the color for on the application for a fee. I could be mistaken but I asked this very same question a long time ago before I had registered Scampers and this is what I was told.

You can register them up to (I believe) one year of age without having to pay a penalty.

I don't register puppies...I wait until they're older and coat starts to break...but that's just what I do.

In my opinion only now, the yorkie on the left I would consider gold and the one on the right tan, again, this is my opinion only. However, when I use the terms I always use the word gold unless it's just so obivious that the color on the head is what I would call a irish setter red. But to be correct in this matter what I stated above is my opinion what the differences in gold and tan would be. I hope that makes sense.

If you read the standard, the word tan is used to describe the color on the head and legs. It uses the word golden as a descriptor for the tan color on the headfall.
