I understand your frustrations....I too showed other dogs years ago......and I cannot remember having as much difficulty then....I go to lots of shows to watch.....and listen....and I do just that.....

Maybe the "newbies" to showing should form a Club......and then we can find one Mentor.....and then all help each other with info, and all the other things that the "veterans" already know. Sounds like a plan to me.....

This is not the norm. Most people in the show world of yorkies are very willing to help a newbie. They have only one criteria; that the newbie is truely sincere about showing.

When purchasing a show dog from a reputable breeder you also purchase a mentor. I know I did, my mentor was at every show I showed my first Champion. From her 1st puppy match till the day she obtained her Championship and went on to Special. She was there helping me with my first litter and has always been there to help me every step of the way.

That is exactly what I was expecting.....I am so looking forward to that kind of relationship too.....

In all my crazy questions that i have asked show breeders......I have not run into any....that "blow" me off.....they all have been very helpful....I am sure they get tired of me asking.....

Of course, the only "dumb" question is the one you DON"T ask.....

We only ask one thing, hold your questions until after the yorkies have been shown, then you'll have our undevided attention. I know that I try to be as pleasant as I can be when I'm getting my dogs ready, but questions and people coming up to and asking to touch your dog prior to showing is not the best time. My standard response is please don't touch right now, but after the show you can hold the dog all you want.

I have a standard of etiquette.....for me and my own family at shows....

I showed too in the past.....so before the show is not the best time for questions......

My questions are usually over the phone or on YT.....I only come up with the questions at the show....they actually get asked later...

Don't get me wrong, I welcome questions. It's much easier to answer questions when demonstrating in person. I'm not just interested in educating the potential new exhibitor/breeder, the future of the breed is in their hands. I'm also interested in educating the pet owner to prevent heartache.

I think some "show people" forget to enjoy what they are doing and why they are doing it. They take losses personally, and very hard and don't want to help because they see everyone as a threat. Every judge has his/her own opinion and every dog shows better on some days than others, You just got to roll with the flow even tho it is hard sometimes. I once had a judge notice that I was not thrilled taking a 4th. with my Longhaired Dachshund, who the four previous days had won 3 days and reserve 1 day. He actually said, " I DID write a book of standards." I couldn't resist asking if he'd read it! Needless to say, I didn't bother showing under him again. I think that 99% of the time owners, breeders, handlers and even judges are very nice and will help, especially a newbie, (or an oldie that has become a newbie).
