Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Great advice Lori I went to watch my breeder at one show before I entered my first show. She was there too, thank God ! I knew absolutely nothing. From then on I went to all of the other shows without help or mentoring. I would suggest if you can find a mentor-do so ! Also, handling classes are a great idea if you have them available to you. This was my turning point. You and your dog will experience the atmosphere of a dogshow with all of it's chaos and noises. Also the ring work and table work, and the mock judge examinations. This all helps. Besides that I watch countless videos on youtube and DVDs of yorkie specialties and watch how the pros do it. I find there is a lot to showing and caring for yorkies. The biggest difference between them and other toy breeds would be the coat.Daily maintenance for between shows and the actual preparing of the coat for a show. Two totally different things. Sounds discouraging, but really if you love it ...it isn't.I love all aspects of caring for and presenting the dogs. The social part is fun too, I've met a lot of great people that share my obsession ! |

Great advice from you also Carl. I did forget the Mentor and the coat care. But like you said that is a huge part of showing your yorkie. I do want to add that showing is not for everyone. But the good thing is besides meeting new friends you will know from the first few shows if it is for you or not. You do have to have a passion for it.

Also look at local clubs if there is a Yorkie club in your area, or a toybreed club, or even an all breed club, consider joining, you will meet lots of folks in the dog performance arena. I would like to add that you will need a special show lead; many exhibitors use what is generically referred to as the kindness lead. It will have a wide band usually of silk, that goes around high up on the dog's neck, just under the chin. This is important as you do NOT want to pressurize the sensitive and delicate mid throat area aka the trachea. Before placing it on your dogs neck practise placing it on a stationary object; maybe a small pop bottle or milk bottle. It takes time and practise to put on the lead and have it stay high up on the neck. If you can find a mentor who can help you learn to show, that is undoubtably the best way. There are other threads on here that take about show training your dog; just do a search and you find lots of reading material. Good luck in the ring
