Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Getting started I am really excited. My local kennel club is now offering a 6 week handling class. I start March 1st. I am going to take my 6 months old girl. Would it be better to take an older one? I have been taking her everywhere with my the last few days and she is terrified of the car. Any advice for them getting her over the nerves? I am thinking time will help but thought I would ask. Any other tips you have would be great also.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Thank you Betty! I have been wanting to do this for a long time but the drive was just to much with the kids. Now they have one local I am really excited.

Try playing calming music on radio, even hum or sing along. Take short trips and if possible stop take her out play with her, then back in car and go home. Also warm up car before placing her in car. You can visit a pet store, and buy a little treat for her there, and let her walk the aisles with you and meet other folks, and maybe some dogs as well. If she isn't leash trained it might be easier to take an older dog that is. This way you make your learning mistakes on a dog that presumably you have no intention of showing. I'm assuming that your 6mth old is the one eventually you will be bringing into the ring. Good luck and have fun in the ring

| Good luck Mellisa, I'm glad you found some place to take your girl, will be excited to hear how it goes. I am in the same boat as you were, the closest place for me to go is 1 1/2 hour drive and after working all day then getting home so late is impossible for me. I have tired to find someone closer but no luck yet.

| I would take both girls, very often a youngdog gets tired during the class from the exercise & excitement or bored. (you don't want your dog to get bored and not like going - most classes last an hour or so.) This way you could work one girl then put her up in her crate and work the other girl. They both get practice & the exposure and you get more practice with different dogs. Teresa Last edited by Teresamag; 02-15-2011 at 03:38 AM. |

Is there anything I need to take to class that will be helpful? I really want to be prepared the best I can.
