| Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Well, after watching the video I know I have an awful lot to learn. The dogs were all gorgeous but my personal favorite (based on personality and the way the dog moved - not on any actual knowledge) didn't even place. I'm guessing best of class is defined as which dog in this class is the best specimen of its breed -- I don't know how you would even judge that. Maybe it's a good thing if the Yorkie isn't best of show, or even best of class. If the breed gets too much attention, then it seems to become a fashion statement rather than a treasured pet, don't you think? I sure would like to attend a few shows and learn to interpret what I'm seeing. |

| Watching the toy group, I was wondering if the judge couldn't help but be a bit prejudiced against a yorkie just because they are so popular (2nd most popular dog in the U.S.). You know, sort of like, "Yeah, yeah, everybody loves a yorkie, let's see what else looks good." Nothing against the judge, of course, and I mean that sincerely. Don't know anything about the gentleman.

| Unless we get a Yorkie loving judge, I doubt one will win again..not in my life time. I have heard judges say they want more of a Terrier attitude..ok, I agree. Some are not very animated and do not stand out. Jackpot is not just a well bred Yorkie, he is a true terrier in spirit. Acts self important and shows off...what more can a breeder do to turn a judges favor to them..? I am not a Peke hater, but I do not get it...the dog shows no animation or reacts to nothing...perhaps that is the standard..."dead pan face"..I realize a Peke is not suppose to act like a Yorkie or a Yorkie like a Peke... I would love to shave that Peke down and see what is so fabulous under the coat to make a judge pick it... |

But for the Yorkie not to even place in Group is a true shame.

| You would think, right? But do you know anybody that has one? In fact, I'm not sure I've ever seen one other than on tv. I wonder if there's a "Peke Talk" and they will get wind that we are bad-mouthing their beloved breed. They will think we are jealous of their win or something. Well, at any rate, my family's collective jaw dropped when Jackpot didn't even get pulled out by the judge before he made his final cut/decision.

| YT Addict | The pek was honestly not pretty. The fur just looked like a ratted mess. EVEN if the yorkie wasn't to win there were others who were much nicer looking if you ask me. But what do I know... I just honestly thought Jackpot looked in tune, looked alert, happy and not spazzy. The coat was fabulous and Lorrain, was very chique! I loved the cream colored suit, very tasteful and left the focus on Jackpot. He should have placed honestly and I am not saying that just because I am adicted! |

| I'm not really a Pom person, but talk about animation! He was showing like a million bucks....but....Jackpot was still such a perfect example of what at Yorkie should be and of course, Lorraine always enters a ring with such class and elegance, not overshadowing the dog who is always meticulous groomed.

I own one. I can honestly say that I used to think they were such an ugly breed...thought how could anyone think they are cute?! My sweet Odie came to us as a foster/rescue (in really bad shape) just about a month ago. I have to tell ya, I think he is soooooooooooooooo stinkin' cute...I mean, SUPER adorable!!! I would have never thought that I would feel this way in the past, but now cannot imagine not having his cute little smushy face in our family. With that said (written)....there's not another breed as pretty or striking as a Yorkie and Jackpot is GORGEOUS! ![]() Tammy Last edited by TammyJM; 02-17-2011 at 12:59 PM. | |

You need to know the standard inside out for each breed, and everyone starts at the beginning with really understanding just one breed. The standard covers appearance, attitute, gaiting, structure, coat, color, teeth, etc. Then the judge, judges on that day in that moment which dog comes closest to the standard. Dogs just like people will have good days, and not so good days. It shows in their gaits, their attitude, their expression. An eye for a dog is a good basic book, that helps you to understand structure and how to "look" at a dog. then once you get a couple of concepts you let your eye get trained. You watch dogs everywhere, just with an open gaze to observe. You will start to "see" differences in movement; never mind that right now you don't know the technical term for what you are seeing, that you can always look up. Another great video is called Dog Steps, which shows correct and incorrect structure and movement.
