| ![]() Hi - I'm Pam and I'm with NOLA Labrador Retriever Rescue, a rescue based in New Orleans, Louisiana. I can honestly say that I never thought I would be posting about our rescue on a Yorkie board but here I am. Yesterday, Kim (the founder of our rescue) was searching for one of our rescues that had escaped from the backyard of the shelter's "approved puller" (that's a whole other story!). She was placing a poster on the door of a closed building when she heard panting. She looked around and spotted a mass of fur with ears, eyes and a mouth and chain in a small crate with no food or water. Next to the little guy was a cardboard box where she found a dead 7 week old chocolate lab. There is no doubt that the dog she found would have died by the time people showed up for work on Monday so she untangled the chain, picked up a halter and collar and named the little guy "Addys" (after a town they passed by). She called her vet and convinced her to open her clinic on a Saturday evening so Addys could be checked out. Addys is a 4-6 pound dog who appears to be a Yorkshire Terrier. Addys is intact and appears to have problems with 2-3 legs - they are either broken or deformed. Addys is at the vet's office and we'll learn more tomorrow (eg. heartworm status is a huge concern around here). We already love Addys - he's very sweet and friendly and we definitely want to do what we can to help him. It'll be a long road before Addys is ready to find a new home but I thought there's no better place to learn about the breed and find out what we should look for in a home than on a breed specific board. Are there any breed specific health concerns we should be asking the vet to check? Last edited by Pam and Addys; 03-13-2011 at 04:40 PM. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | ![]() Thank God Kim found him and so sad about the baby lab. Some health issues in Yorkies are Liver shunts and Luxating patellas. They love to be with their people and have a lot of spirit. I hope you find him the loving home he deserves.

| ![]() Would Luxating patellas cause him to appear as though his legs had been broken? Being up here is hard because I really don't have first hand knowledge but Kim said he legs appear either broken (an old injury) or deformed (birth defect). I know border terriers can have the same issue but I've never experienced it with Grizzelda so I'm not sure what it would look like. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() I havn't seen luxating putella except on a video. To me it was more like their knees were snapping out of place. I'm sure in time someone more knowledgable can answer your question better, but I wanted to say that I think what you do is awesome. He is an adorable fella as well.

| ![]() LP can make pups walk in a strange way...sort of bowlegged looking. Thank you for saving that precious little guy. I hope he will be good as new in no time!

| ![]() Depending on the grade of LP, it can make their legs look different...but not too sure about broken. Dexter has LP and he is bow-legged...looks like he was riding a horse all day, but doesn't look broken... i dont have any advice, but thank you for taking this little guy in. he looks just like my family dog growing up. ![]() |

| ![]() Buster has LP in his rear legs and arthritis in his front. He has bowlegs in front but never displayed a broken legged look that I know of. Sometimes when he was walking his knee would slip out and stay out until he extended it and it popped back in. Sadly it sound like sweet Addy's legs were either broken or deformed. Bless Kim for looking out for the little guy. How people can just leave an animal in a box like it is trash sickens me. Wishing Addy all the best healing and finding a furever home.

| ![]() The vet has said that Addys' legs are like that as a result of a birth defect and that there isn't a surgical option for him. The good news is that Addys is Heartworm Negative - that was a big relief! Addys' foster mom reports that he's a friendly, loveable, spunky little guy who gets along with all her dogs and is happiest curled up on or next to her. His legs don't seem to slow him down at all. He runs and plays with the best of him. When he runs, he does hold up one front leg and only uses 3. I've attached pictures of Addys after having his fur shaved off. You can see the deformity in his legs. Happily, Addys already has a permanent home. One of our board members has adopted several puppy mills dogs when they've been discarded - special needs seniors are her specialty. Addys is still young but her response was 'well then he'll be the youngest special needs dog in the house"! |
