Linda I have no words beyond our conversation last night. I know you will do right for Gabby, no matter what. Hugs. |
I am so sorry to hear this. I am praying for little Gabby. |
My vet spoke with the specialist and we are now waiting for the MIC (minimum inhibatory concentration test) to be completed. His suggestion was to use that as a guide for treatment. The eColi is resistant to everything but Tetracycline and Primor...but even those are not really effective against it. Hopefully when the MIC is back whatever antibiotic the staph is not resistant to will also work for the eColi. There really is nothing else suggested at this point. Our plan is to try and pray a lot....if we cannot get rid of this it will eventually go to her kidneys and then systemic. Very depressing. BUT...I am hopeful. |

Linda, This is so sad that she continues to have problems no matter how much love and treatment she receives. I know your heart is breaking for Gabby. Hopefully there will be a miracle and she is restored to health. Either way I know you ALWAYS do what is best for the pup. Prayers & hugs for you both. Marcy |
I'm so sorry little Gabby is sick. Sending prayers for u Linda and Gabby. I know from being a foster parent to children, u put your heart and soul into their well being. I don't know you personally, but from what I have read on here that is what u do. You and Gabby will be in my thoughts and prayers. |
Thank you so much all of you for your kind words...and for prayers for Gabby. The results came back on the Staph infection and the one drug that will work is Amikacin. It is an injectable antibiotic and she will need to go to the vet daily for 2-3 weeks. My vet was off today so her partner called me...they will confer tomorrow to iron out the plan; but I think it will end up being given intravenously. It can be given subcutaneously, but he said it burns. I do not want her to have any ill effects...if giving it IV will be easier on her, that is what I will want for her. It is a drug that can cause some issues so she will be monitored closely. At this point we have no choice. She could end up in renal failure from the treatment, but will definitely have renal issues if this infection is not cleared up. We are also waiting on further testing to see if perhaps the Amikacin will work for the E.coli infection. I will post more tomorrow when I know exactly what my vet wants to do. |

Still praying and hoping for the best for Gabby. |
Sending prayers for Gabby that the medication kills both infections and does no harm to sweet Gabby. Sending hugs and best wishes. |
Waiting for the news is the hardest part. <3 ::hugs:: I'm on edge waiting for the treatment to take its course and see how things go, so I cannot even imagine what it is like for you! Hang in there! Still praying! Love you sweet Gabby. |
My vet is exploring another medication. She wants to speak with the internal med people at Texas A&M before making a final decision on the treatment plan. She is concerned about the Amikacin and the side effects and wants to make sure that is our only option. So, nothing will be done before Monday. |
I forgot to update. My vet spoke with one of the Internal Med vets at A&M and they suggested an xray to make sure that bladder stones were not present. She also called a different lab to see if they could do a sensitivity test that would include Nitrofurantoin and they can. So, an xray was done on Monday and was negative. She had a cysto and the urine was sent to the other lab. So, we are still playing the waiting game. I am hopeful that we will get to the bottom of this soon...I hate that she has this awful UTI. :( |

Good news for Gabby!!! My vet just called to give me the results of the urine culture and there is NO MRSA!! My first thought was "who do I believe"" .. but as I digested this information it occurred to me that IF it was there it would have shown up. My guess is there was a cross contamination in the first lab. I am horrified when I think of where our conversation was going last week. The plan now is for her to start on Nitrofurantoin q8 for 2 weeks or longer...all will depend on urine c&s coming up negative. We will test her at 2 weeks to see how it is going. Doing a Happy Dance here!! :) :happyboun:happyboun:happyboun:happyboun |
