| Good for you! If you aren't sure what rescues are in your area, a search on PetFinder.com would surely give you a list. Then I would pick the one you are most interested in helping and contact them. Many have volunteer applications/email addresses on their websites. Fund raising, fostering, interviews/inspections of possible furever families, transporting, vet care etc...are all things many rescues need help with. Good luck!

| One other thing I'd check out too is the rescue you are interested in make sure they are reputable. I am finding lately that there are a few rescues that are brokers hiding behind the word rescue. If the rescue seems to have all puppies and a lot of them that is a red flag. Not saying this is always the case but it is something to check out first. Collie Rescue and Referal of White house NJ was just booted from Petfinder. She was getting pups from K-Jac Kennel (puppymill) and claiming they were saved from an auction but someone from rescue did an undercover call and spoke direct to K-Jac and found that this rescue was simply going online to their site and buying pups cheap then reselling on petfinder as a rescue. She had all breeds, plus the designers and was getting $750 and it did not even cover a neuter or spay. There are so many excellent rescues but then you get a few that are not. Good luck to you and it's a great thing you are doing. Elaine |

| You could always become a foster home or you could interview future homes, home inspections, transporting dogs, etc. RetroDoggy Rescue,Michigan Yorkshire Terrier Rescue,Michigan Maltese Rescue takes in a lot of yorkies and maltese.

| I know this sounds obvious but being involved with rescue, something we ALWAYS need is volunteers and donations. We always need someone to help transport or foster dogs and we definitely always need the money. I would just look into local rescues and contact them asking them how to help. I'm sure they will be able to tell you what they need most.

| I called our local animal shelter. The only thing they let volunteers do is play with the cats and kittens two days a week during certain hours. I will keep trying some other local shelters. I would really like to work to help dogs too. Although my son would love to play with the kitties I also want to find a maltese rescue group to make a donation as a tribute to my late grandmother. She adored Malteses and requested that she be buried with the ashes of hers who passed before she did. If you know of a reputable one, would you let me know please? Thanks

| Hi hviola, the local shelters probably won't let you do much. You have to find a rescue group/organization. I posted a link the other day: RetroDoggy Rescue,Michigan Yorkshire Terrier Rescue,Michigan Maltese Rescue Their main focus is yorkies and maltese. They take in very sick dogs, dogs with behavioral issues, healthy dogs, etc. and rehabilitate them. They are a non-profit organization and rely on donations from the public. The people there are incredible and do so much good for yorkies and maltese. You may contact them and see if there's any way you can help. They are based out of Michigan, but they probably have people from the surrounding states that help them.

| Yorkie rescue group right here in need of help! Hi everyone! First of all, let me say this is my second posting on yorkietalk.com. I don't know why i didn't think of this earlier. We rescue yorkies. You love yorkies. It's a match made in heaven. I love to be able to communicate with yorkie lovers about adoption and rescue. This is a response to the post from the person looking to get involved in rescue. Our group is United Yorkie Rescue. We are very reputable and have been recognized as a dedicated, reputable group by Yorkie Talk (they are so very generous as to have a fundraiser on our behalf!!!). Anyway, we are a national nonprofit and subsist solely on donations - both personal donations and adoption donations. If you are interested in adopting or fostering, please check out our site United Yorkie Rescue. We could always use more help. We can only save as many yorkies as we have foster homes for. Thank you for your support from both the raffle ticket fundraiser and from checking out our site! Yorkie Talk members ROCK! Jennifer (foster mom in Miami) |
