If you aren't sure what rescues are in your area, a search on PetFinder.com would surely give you a list. Then I would pick the one you are most interested in helping and contact them. Many have volunteer applications/email addresses on their websites.
Fund raising, fostering, interviews/inspections of possible furever families, transporting, vet care etc...are all things many rescues need help with.
