| What crate should I get Hi all my name is Holly and I just got my 1st baby yorkie. I have always wanted one so a dream come true. So I am looking into her crate/exercise pen/soft carrier ... there are so many options I dont want to make a mistake. Can anyone give me their opinion on what is best for the yorkie. I am home most of the time since I am a work from home mom. I was using piddle pads but my vet was telling most of the little dogs that have housebreaking problems are because they use or have used those pads-so I am going with outside potty time. Just not sure what would be best to own to start with... a tiny wire crate, a soft crate that I can carry around easliy, or one of those new soft sided excersize pens that just pop up which means I can take it around with me. Any suggestions would be great!! I am going crazy trying to decide. I want them all so it really comes down to ease of using. I was also wondering if a small carrier would be enough space for her then I would get two - one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Great to find this website!!! |

| Welcome to YT!!! I can't really help you out there. I don't crate Sophie (did a little at first and just had the small black wire crate with her bed in it). Congratulations on your new addition.

| I am personally not a fan of crating in the traditional sense. However, when you have a puppy, keeping him/her safe needs to be your first priority. I've seen people use a baby playpen before, which I think is really nice (especially if you're home with the little guy). They also sell little indoor fences that you can put up to create a separate play area.

| I think a crate would be best since you are home most of the time and can take the puppy out when needed. You can upgrade to a playpen when she gets better with potty training or when you won't be able to be home all the time. This site has really cheap but good quality wire crates, esp if they are on clearance! And it's free shipping =) Midwest Pets iCrate Single-Door Dog Crate - 15 - X | CSN Stores oh there's also a double door crate on clearance for $21...just scroll down you'll see it Midwest Pets iCrate Double-Door Dog Crate - 15 - X | CSN Stores good luck!! |

In answer to your question. I use all of the above. A large crate for them to sleep in, an x-pen when I'm unable to give them full attention, with a small crate in the x-pen where they can retreat to. Soft crages are great for travel.

| I have this exercise pen. It fits very nicely in my bedroom. I have bedding at one end and a potty pad, in a litter box at the other end. I take him outside to go potty in the mornings, at lunch, after work and then again, at night. During the day he doesn't use the pad, but I feel more comfortable with it in there just in case he needs to go. At night I replace the pad with a bed.... he usually starts whining at about 6am in the morning, to go potty....which is the first time I take him out for his potty break.
