Just bought the big bag of the RC and now my two little smartie pants, pickie eaters decided eek we don't want that no more. They have wet back to Bil Jac. I am taking the RC bag back to Petsmart just opened and only poured (1) cup out. They will take back if it is opened.

For some reason, it's very hard to get dogs to switch off of Bil-Jac. When my girls were puppies, we fed Bil-Jac. Then I started learning more about food and wanted something better. It took FOREVER to get them to stop only eating Bil-Jac! What ended up working for us was Blue Buffalo (pink bag).

We fed RC when we first got the girls. It gave Lily very itchy skin, as does all kibble. I don't think RC is as bad as some of the others offered but the quality definitely doesn't match the price.

For the woman looking for cheaper (wet) dog food- have you tried Honest Kitchen? We use it. You can get some flavors for like $28/ for a 4lb box (17 pounds of food). That will last one of my dogs like 6 weeks or so.

Mine go back and forth. They just one day decide they want something different. I have tried the Blue, I may get a small bag of that again to have on hand when they decide they no longer want Bil-Jac.

I don't know how to define those words, but I call a dog a Premium food if it doesn't contain corn as the first ingredient. When corn is combined with other amino acids it forms a protein, and manufactures can count it as part of their overall protein. Again this is not necessarily a bad thing, but it should not be listed as the first ingredient. It's not the first ingrediant in RC, so I call RC a premium food. I guess the way it's defined over the internet is if you can buy a pet food at the grocery store, it's junk food, if you can buy it at Pet Smart and Petco, it may be a premium food. If you buy your food at dog boutiques or from private individuals it's considered Super Premium! :p Whether you dog does best on "Super Premium or not, you'll have to decide. Ok thank you for your answer :D !
Royal Canin is only sold at few pet stores here in Iceland, and at the vets, so I guess its super premium :) ?
Premium food is like ''OK dog'', and Pedigree and those products i think...
I dont like giving my dog food with roadkills and by-products in it.. like ''Pedigree'' is :S Ive always been told that Royal Canin was the best dog food.

Also I live in Iceland, so there are not many dog food i can get.
The only Super Premium dog food thats sold here is Royal Canin and Hill's.

Oh you live in Iceland, I hear that's beautiful. I use to think Greenland was the nice place and Iceland was the frozen place, but a friend told me it's just the opposite, and Icelanders named it that to keep others away! :D

About a year ago, Royal Canin was bought by "Mars" the chocolate company. I thought I heard that they were not going to re formulate the food:confused: I bet Mars just doesn't care about the healthful aspect of the dog food they make...after all, they mostly make candy.:(

I use Wellness and I can always get it for under $13.00 for a 4lb bag.

Also the bag is now gold and only contains 12 cups of food! Am I missing something here or has Royal Canin lost their minds??? I went to 2 different stores and the price had increased at both of them.

I've always heard they were very similar to Innova, I just switched from feeding Innova to Taste of the Wild (going completely grainless). I can't believe the affordable price of Taste of the Wild.
At some point I believe going completely RAW may be the cheapest option...and produce the best coat etc results.
Prepackaged dog specific RAW foods can be super pricey! I do use Stella and Chewy's patties for raw meats as it is, well more convent in a couple ways.

They made that change over in the Yorkshire about a year ago here.
The price shot up, the bag changed & they must have changed the formula because my lot wouldn't touch the new stuff. Even if I hid it they managed to eat everything else but leave that in the bowl.

I changed to Royal Canin Adult Mini & they eat that happily with no ill effects.

FidoTheYorkie 01-03-2011 01:14 PM

Where I live i can't get anything else than Royal Canin, Hill's and some other dog foods, ive tried almost all of them, and only royal canin works for mine...

Is royal canin just some junk food or what???
If its such a bad food as some people here on yorkietalk think, why do almost all vets sell it??

I guess they are like us... we all react to foods differently

Not all of the Royal Canin Dog Foods have corn gluten in them. The Yorkshire Terrier Blend does have corn gluten but MANY others do not. For instance: MINI Toy Indoor Adult 25 has no corn. It is still a good Yorkie blend as the protein is more in line with what a toy housedog would require. I am still leery about long-term feeding of the super-high protein % foods. I wanted to try grain free but the only ones I saw locally had 42% protein -- sort of hard on the pancreas/liver. So, I stuck to one that included grain. I am testing Innova and Solid Gold at the moment. Mine LOVE Royal Canin but am hoping after being off it for a while they will forget and accept another food. I don't think RC is a bad food, but do think there are better ones. If my pups will just eat the other ones as well, I will be good to go.

What a dog can tolerate does depend on what has been going on recently too. I used to feed Canidae with absolutely NO problems, they all did well on it. Then I had them off all canned for quite a while. Reintroduced the same Canidae canned food and they got the runs. It wasn't the food -- it was what they had become accustomed to. I have a feeling this is often the reason for such different experiences with the same food. Part difference in dogs, and part difference in what they are used to at the time.

I stared my furbabies on Royal Canin fr puppy to adult, but Mily now 4, stated having problem with her liver count, the vet said RC was hard on her liver, so now I have them both on Hills Prescription Diet I/D Hepatic Health hard and soft food an all the number on her liver came back good. So they are both on it, and I'm happy with it. It cost a litle more , but I do get a bigger bag and the soft food is 2.38 a can , but I cut it in 3 pie and give them 1/2 of a pie to each a day. So in the long run , I feel it's better for them and it's not that much of a diffrent if their pancreas/liver came back with good count. they love it, so we are all happy :p

Ι always was give to my babies R.C but not any more. I dont think that is worth all those money. Here in Greece 3 kilos RC costs 21€ (=27$) .
My vet give me another dog food, has the same quality with R.C as we see in ingredients and as my vet says, but it's cheaper .I use the new dog food about a month and everything is the same .I also cook for them some meals ! :)
