| Outdoor Gear for Little Dogs? Penny loves hiking with us, and our adventures tend to take us into some pretty extreme conditions. The local outdoor supplies store has some nice products for dogs like extra-light, fleece-lined, waterproof and windproof coats and dog packs designed so dogs can carry their own food when backpacking, but they are all designed for dogs that are 20lbs+. At 13lbs, Penny is robust enough that I know she could handle packing her own food, and I'm sure she'd really like a very nice coat to keep her cozy when our wanderings end atop a snow-capped mountain. Has anybody ever seen quality outdoor gear for littler dogs anywhere?

| I think that's great that Penny enjoys hiking! I bought a fabulous coat for Edie when we lived in Maine, but I can't tell you who makes it. It is made of the same material as horse blankets. It was polar fleece on the outside. Easy to put on, too. You might want to get Penny used to wearing boots if your hikes are rough. We hike with Edie, but I carry her in the "dog gone device" a backpack made specially for dogs. She loves it. SHe has gone bike riding, skiing, and hiking in this thing. |

| Sounds like a lot of fun you guys have for being so outdoorsy! lol Although at 13lbs and with such athletic owners, I am sure Penny is pretty healthy and strong. However, I would hesitate to make her carry her own weight in food... or a little weight even since during a long hike, you get exhausted no matter what and her knees probably don't need any more weight added to it than her own. Heck, I'd love for someone to carry my backpack and bags around whether or not I ought to be able to carry some weight. Being free of any kind of burden certainly makes any amount of exertion a little easier. Of course, the humans will have to suffer the extra weight of a bit of dog food and water. For less strenuous excursions like a trip to the park, I'd bet it'd be nice for your dog to carry a few of their supplies along. Those backpack thingies for dogs are so cute though I mostly see Outward Hound ones only! |
