| Black stool indicates bleeding high up in the digestive tract. These symptoms may be caused by internal bleeding. This is an emergency. If you have already been to the vet and no testing was done or drugs given, then this is still an emergency.

I wonder if their food has anything to do with the eye gubbers? I have noticed ours not having near the problem since I have changed them over to Welliness. My vet said too that I could use artificial tears and it won't hurt them.

Did anyone but me notice that most of the postings about yucky eye boogers are about male dogs? Not all, but most. We have 6 yorkies, 3 male and 3 females. My male dogs (age 3, 6, and 12) have to have their eyes cleaned with mineral oil and a comb atleast twice a week and my females (age 5,6, and 14) never. I 've alway thought it was odd, but reading these postings makes me wonder.

I'd say you are a few months behind in starting a cleaning program. Gently wipe the eye area with a warm moist cloth or the premoistened wipes they sell in pet supply stores. Once you have a build up of eye gunk it is painful for the dog to have it removed so daily cleaning is necessary. If you do this on a daily basis and give a nice treat as soon as you are done he will learn to accept the grooming. It is just like any other kind of training.

I have to clean Jada's eyes and the bridge of her nose every day! If I don't, the eye gunk will get hard and it's really hard to clean. I have eye wipes that I bought from petco, but I have found that a bath cloth with warm water works best. Her face does not have an odor but I read that if your dog has tear stains on their face that are left too long without being cleaned then it can breed bacteria, so maybe thats something that would cause an odor.

My Yorkie has tear stains (among other eye issues). I clean her eyes twice daily with a warm, wet paper towel. Then I use her brush (boar bristles). After reading this I think I will try using a comb instead. I'll also try a washcloth instead of a paper towel. How do you get rid of the red/brown discoloration in the fur? Getting the gunk out is easy enough. It seems like after cleaning and brushing the area, it just spreads the discoloration throughout the fur on her face.

There are products that you can buy specifically for tear stain removal. I've also read that it may be caused by nutritional issues, some people say they give their dog distilled water and it is helpful.

I feed her Innova, which is one of the highest quality dog foods out there. I also give her carbon-filtered water. She is blind in her right eye and she has dry eye in that eye. I give her a tear stimulant in that eye twice a day along with eye lubricant. So, she just has excessive tearing in that one eye. It's actually more runny without her medication (which doesn't make much sense to me--if she has dry eye, why is it extra watery?). Tearlax looks like a good product. I guess I should call her ophthalmologist before I try any products for her eyes.

				   | Mine used to have horrible brown eye goo when she was on Orijen. Unfortunately Orijen never agreed with as she has a super sensitive belly. She is now on Hills I/D canned food which is the only food she can have and no eye goo at all! Amazing you would think it would be the opposite Orijen being such a high quality food! So possibly their diet has a part to play as well?

I talked to her ophthalmologist and he said I could reduce the tear stimulant drops to once a day. That will help reduce the tear rivers in that eye at least. He also approved of the dietary supplements for reducing tear stains that do not contain the antibiotics (Tylosin). If her tear stains continue over the next week I will try ordering Tearlax for her. Poor baby (~18 weeks), she has so many eye problems. She runs away whenever I get stuff to clean or treat her eyes. I'm always gentle and talk to her, give her treats, etc. Reducing the tear stains/gunk will reduce how often I have to clean her eyes. So, I hope one or both of my above solutions works.
