| Well....if it was my dog....I would do a grab and run!!! I certainly wouldn't trust the court system....they have too many rules. Even though this is obvious as to owns the dog, you still have all those rules to jump through. I would just want my baby back!!!

| Am I the only one who think the "journalists" who wrote these stories dropped the ball? I for one would like to know the name of the chip company as they bear some responsiblility here. I would like to know what exactly "within days" and a "few days" mean. Those terms are too ambiguous. I would also like to know why the dog thiefs never contacted the original owners. They obviously knew the dog had a chip. In New York how long before a dog is considered abandoned? If you find a dog what are you required to do before you can claim the dog as your own? In many places it is illegal not to make an effort to find the oringinal owners. Did the original owner report her dog missing? Kinda seems like the media here is more interested is scaring us over the safety of our furbabies, instead of informing us. Last edited by Harley_chik; 08-08-2008 at 12:35 AM. |

| This is unbelievable! I don't understand why it is considered a civil matter. It is theft- that is a criminal matter.

| OK, so this story put me into a panic! Both of mine are registered with AVID and they do not wear the AVID tag. I just called AVID to confirm my pups registrations and that they will not change the registered owner without security. AVID advises that the only way this can happen is if the original owner did not register them and the number is "not assigned". The lady I spoke to asked MANY questions and checked my security information before they would discuss my pups with me at all. She also said that they get alot of complaints from spouses who they will not talk to. They will only talk to the "registered owner" . PHEW, I feel better now. Hopefully the company for this baby is not AVID... I dont know how those people can sleep at night after stealing that baby. d

| My dog Baby has an AVID microchip (registered). I never thought about what I would do if she went missing. Obviously, I would have notified the local shelters and animal control, done the whole poster thing, etc. But I don't think it would have occurred to me to contact her CHIP company. Reading this now though, I'd be tempted to contact the chip company FIRST. Kind of like with credit cards - if you notify them first, maybe it will heighten their security levels, so they know not to be changing registration information without checking that they are speaking to the OWNER! Still, it's all very scary. I never did put Baby's chip tag on her. But if someone found her and just decided to take her home, her chip wouldn't really do me any good. And I'm kind of concerned that if someone wanted to keep her from me, having them KNOW she has a chip could be detrimental. They might be less likely to take her to a vet, for example, for fear that the vet would scan her, and realize the chip is not registered to them. But if they DIDN'T know she was chipped, and that happened, someone might actually contact me to let me know my flagged dog just showed up in a vet's office... Dunno. I hate even thinking about it. Chances are someone who would steal your pet wouldn't take very good care of them - I mean, you kinda have to be concerned about the animal's welfare to take them to a vet, and if you're that concerned, you wouldn't be stealing from loving owners in the first place... The whole thing makes me really really sad... ![]() Hope she gets her baby back... |

| I have an idea (yes, I'm using my girlfriend's yorkie account)... All NY Yorkie owners/dog owners should rally up outside this persons house and protest. Eventually they'll know the pressure and give the dog back. You'll also get news coverage, promote your site, and maybe a Yorkie watching TV somewhere will see his long lost brother on. ![]() All seriousness this is wrong. Goes to prove this microchip technology is basically bs. I'm sure any shady NY vet changed the registration info for a few bucks. Like another user posted, getting a 'tattoo' seems more plausible. You can tattoo a tiny number or something, get a photo of you holding the dog with tattoo showing and ownership shouldn't be a problem. That and tattoo artist can show paperwork and vouch for you. This poor person now has criminal charges. This sucks. Someone attempts to take my girlfriends yorkie, I think I would punch them right in the face, along with a size 10 foot in there ash.

| I would soooo do this...I'm always up for a protest, boycott, etc. No guarantee it would work, but as others have said, with all the proof these poor people have of ownership, it's ridiculous that they're having such a hard time getting the dog back. Screw microchipping; I'm all for registered DNA! |

| This is a very sad story. I can't imagine just taking a dog and not even trying for an extended period of time to find the owners and in different ways. I would just feel so guilty that the pup is alone and missing his mom and dad. But this story scared me enough to call Home Again, with whom Jack is registered. I asked them if my dog were stolen or found, what steps would this new person need to take to get his registration changed. He said that they NEED to call the owner, as stated in the most recent registration, to get the ok to change. They cannot change it without original owner approval. He said if the dog is chipped but not registered, then at that point, anyone can register him. I now see how important of a decision it was to go with Home Again and now I just need to be sure to keep it updated and current. I also had him double check his registration to make sure the vet's office sent in the paper work.... thank god they did. I feel so bad for this lady and her Yorkie. How scary this must be. Sending prayers that this is resolved and this lady gets her furbaby back.
