| Are Table Scraps Ok? I put a post on the general forum, but I think I should have done it here on the nutrition forum. Here is what I wrote, if anyone can provide some answers, I would appreciate it very much! Today I have been spending time researching different diets, including the raw diet. I'm not sure if I'm ready to commit to that yet. However, I want to know if it is okay to feed my puppy some one offs when we are making dinner. For example, tonight we had salmon. I read that raw salmon is not a good idea unless it has been frozen first. How about cooked fresh salmon? Any problems there? I read the post on things to avoid, I'm thinking that when I prepare food like salmon, I'll just leave one portion of it without salt or seasoning of any kind and give that to Sam. I'll admit it...he ate some cedar plank salmon tonight and LOVED IT! I just hope we don't regret it. Any thoughts or experience out there about giving the dog some cooked or raw meat as a treat or supplement to their norman kibble diet? Perhaps just a few food scraps from the table if it is free of seasoning or spices? I've read so much about Yorkies having sensitive digestive systems, I don't want to cause him undue stress or problems. (I know to put the food in his dish and not feed him from the table so he does not learn bad table manners...) Any advice would be very much appreciated!!! Thank you in advance! |

| My dogs get some of the food I might have off of my plate, sure. They know not to beg, and if I'm irritated that day and simply want to not have them laying at my feet, I tell them all to go lay down and they scatter, either leaving the room entirely or going to their perspective beds. With that said, I'm careful about what I give them. Nothing high in fat or any of the known "poisonous" foods like onions/grapes/chocolate and so on. They love it, and I enjoy sharing w/ my little ones. Just be aware of what you're feeding them and that his manners don't slack because of it and I say GO FOR IT! |

| I think the odd bit of table scraps here and there are fine as long as they don't contain onions, grapes, or chocolate. Just make sure that if you give him some raw meat as a treat don't give him any kibble within 5 hours of him eating it. |

| you know what... i hate the idea of table scraps. i have three shnoodles and i would always let them lick my plate if the food was okay. now...they watch me eat and i hate it. i also have a yorkie who is 8 weeks old today... i haven't fed him ANY table scraps and i put him in his tote crate when i eat so he does not follow in the path of my schnoodles.

| A little bit every now and then is ok, you just have to monitor them afterwards to see if they have some sort of reaction. With Chip I gave him some scraps that other dogs were fine with, but for him it was too rich and he got diarrhea. If I give him pork chop bones or steak bones, he tends to have to poop more. As long as its not overly seasoned, heavy in oil, and not on the bad list moderation is the way to go. |

| Table scraps makes me think of salt and fat. That is not okay but you obviously know that. If you want to give your dog people treats, that is perfectly fine. I prefer an entirely people food diet for dogs over dog food as long as it is supplemented properly. Here are some dinner foods that I wouldn't hesitate to give a Yorkie in very small amounts. Anytime I say meat I mean cooked, not raw. Chicken (as lean as possible) Carrot Green Beans Squash Potato (peeled and cooked) Sweet Potato (peeled and cooke...very healthy) Oatmeal Rice Egg Turkey There is plenty that they can have. Also, a little bit of salt shouldn't hurt anything as long as it is only given on occasion. I would personally avoid pork and ham since it is high in fat and I'm not comforable giving it to Yorkies. That is just my opinion though.

| ......Dr. Tom Lonsdale believes table scraps are fine if you are feeding the raw diet.........and I would think something like salmon would be a good table scrap........but I agree w lara just be careful you don't feed any that are on the nono list or w spices, etc...........last wk I was at the beach w a friend and she gave my yorkie some melted cheese before I realized it probably had some spicy stuff added to it.........sure enough she was up all night....took her outside and she wanted to eat grass to sooth her tummy so I gathered up a good handful took it inside and washed it and let her eat it.........she was fine and forgave me for being a bad mom........ www.rawmeatybones.com |

| We don't give table scraps here either. I might cook them up some boiled chicken and add it to there meals, or give them some white rice, but no scraps.

| I guess it depends on how healthy your own diet is, personally I try to eat a healthy unprocessed diet. So the 'scraps' they get occasionally are simply left over cooked meat, veggies, potato etc. |

| Thank you all for the thoughts. I have been a little scared since the doggy treats we gave him worked him over. We do eat very healthy and primarily eat whole foods, low in fat, etc. No processed foods at all. It's good to know that a little treat here or there will not do harm if I avoid the foods on the harmful foods list. I gave him a bath last night, which he hated, and he was mad at me for the rest of the night. He came from the breeder with ear mites and his ear drops make his hair greasy. I had to really wash good around his face and he did not appreciate it one bit. I'm hoping to win him back with some good home cookin'! Thanks again! |

| I think there's a major difference between table scraps and feeding people food...Here's my reasoning: If you feed a dog off your plate, he/she is going to think they can beg.... If you want to feed your dog some of what you had (free of seasonings, of course), then once you should feed the dog on his own plate after you eat, so that he/she knows not to beg. I homecook for my dogs, so they only get people food and it is perfectly safe as long as you know what kinds of foods they can't have.

| I homecook, but I don't feed table scraps because I don't want Jake to start begging, and I don't want him to have any seasonings he shouldn't have. What I do, for an example, is if I'm making chicken for dinner, I will boil some for him and give him that along with some veggies that I also cook separately for him. Once we are ready to sit down to eat, I put his food down for him. That way, he eats his, we eat ours, he doesn't beg and everyone is happy.
