| I don't know a lot about it at all, except my breeder didn't give it to Kacee. In fact, on Kacee's vaccination record she explicitly wrote, "No Leptospirosis." The only thing I remember about the shot is that research has supposedly shown that it can lead to cataracts when the dog gets older. |

| I called Bide-a-Wee and im going to set up an appt ASAP with em tomorrow the office is closed wednesdays. i hate the feeling of being misguided... i trusted that doc. and in doing so i could've possibly endangered Chicle's life. all this is too much, u know the saying Careful what u wish for! well im really feeling the brunt of it! this is my first time having a puppy of any kind. ive always wanted a yorkie ALWAYS and when i got him it was a spur of the moment type thing, i was very unprepared and i feel awful for not being prepared as i should have been b/c the one who is suffering hte mose is Chicle. this just saddens me I thank you all alot for all ur advice as u can see i need a whole lot of it. i just hope he is all right... in the long run. are they life threatening combining those two vaccines? are there long term side-effects? does anyone know? |

| I was trying to find some info, but most of the time I might as well be reading greek! I'll see if I can find more. I found this one paragraph: 2. Kansas University reports that the Leptospirosis vaccine is THE major cause of vaccine reactions, so much so that they consider the risks outweigh the benefits. It is no longer considered a core vaccine and they even recommend it should not be given to puppies (9,14). http://www.britfeld.com/vaccine-thompson.htm |

| Sorry..I am reading this post a bit late..but I agree with everything they said..I am in staten island but my vet explicitly said no Lepto..and he wouldn't give Maximus more then 1 shot at a time (for any of the vaccines)..I got them all seperate because he felt that 2 shots in 1 day was way to much for Maixmus and he is 4 lbs. now..they even called 3 days after the lyme to make sure he was okay and not having any bad effects fromt he shot..because I had mentioned that after the first lyme he had seemed lethargic

| And I found this, but so far nothing that says anymore than has already been discussed: Logically, you would wonder: "Why give the same dose of a vaccine to a 90 pound dog that you would to a 3 pound dog?" Even within the breeding community, there is dissension about which vaccines to give. One breeder has quit giving the Leptospirosis Vaccine to their puppies based upon research at Kansas State University that suggests that there are more reactions to this vaccine than to others, and that Leptospirosis is pretty rare. Another breeder has not had any problems with this particular vaccine, although it is not given to their pups until 4 months of age. In the final analysis, the decision when and how much to vaccinate is left to the owner's and their veterinarian's discretion. http://teacupandtoypet.com/health/chihuahuahealth.html |

| Is it still ok not to give the Lepto shot since it may pose a zoonotic (transmissible) risk to owners? I am very worried and not sure if it should be given or not....we always have before with no problems, but it only takes once!

| We went to the vet today and I asked about the Lepto shot. Our vet said that our area has MANY MANY cases of Lepto and he sees one case a week. That is only one vet in our area!! He just said that when giving the lepto to them to not give it in a combo vaccine and to keep a close eye on them after. Just thought I would let you know ...so I guess it really depends on where you live if you should get it or not.
