Lepto?
 
Why does everyone not give Lepto shots? Can they not get sick if you don't give the shot??? I'm confused :confused:

Most vets I have talked to and the research I have done have lead me to believe that the risk is not worth the benefit. There are not many places where lepto is a problem and for indoor dogs like yorkies, the risk of infection is even less. A lot of yorkies react negatively to the lepto vaccine and it can be fatal.

I have never given my dogs a lepto shot and most vets will not even offer it. When I took Chewy in for his last round of shots she said "OK vaccines but no lepto for you little guy" Apparently it can be quite dangerous to give it to them.

OMGSH my doggie got that shot! about 2 wks ago ....
y is it bad and how come my vet decided to give it to him??
what time of vaccine is this .. i know stupid of me not to know or ask what it is at the vets office ... eeeeeeeeeeek

I'm in NYC are you in the city? Where did you go? If it was 2 weeks ago and nothing happened, I would assume that all is OK.

im in the city upper west side. symophony vet center is the name of the clinic... but he was feeling sick last week ... didnt really knwo what it was we thought he ate soemthing .. im not sure if u remember. he was drooling A LOT.
but hes ok now. could that have been b/c of the vaccine?

Most vets well versed in toy dogs will not give the lepto vaccine. I would refuse it the next time as most shot reactions will occur the second time they get the vaccine. If i am wrong someone can correct me.

My vet said the FDA was re-evualuating the Lepto part of the shots given to dogs...So he did not give it to Sammi

That could have been it. I would ask the vet why they gave the shot. Vet's and all Dr.'s) must be accountable for their decisions. You have every right to know and you deserve an answer because it could have been far worse.

OMGSH u guys im scared to go back there ... ugh i have such bad luck with vets .. i need to find a good one. Chicle has his next vet appt on the 2nd of july for his last shots... what do i do? go to another vet?
when he got the lepto he also got the rabbies vacc. too....

Wait, she got the Lepto and Rabies shot at the same time??? They really advise against giving ANY other shot with the Rabies...I have a WONDERFUL vet in Brooklyn if u want his info...But if I were you I might start looking for another place to bring your baby (IN MY OPINION)

yes Fran, both at the same time he slept a lot after that and then (this on a saturday) then on a thursday he was drooling and not feeling well.
where in bklyn? i would greatly appreciate the info thanks. im really upset now ...

Maybe it was the reaction to both shots given at once that made him ill...My vet is in Bensonhurst...We have been going to him for 18 years now...I will PM you with his info...

I go to Dr. Parr at Bide-a Wee and they are great. They are located at 38th and 1st Ave. Everyone there is so sweet and they are very informed. I took my old dog there as well so I have been going for 7 years. As Fran said, a rabies shot should be given alone. Chewy is getting his tomorrow, 3 weeks after his last round of shots. Again, i would call and ask about this, make them give you an answer because it is dangerous.

thanks again fran ... i guess ill troop it to bklyn i want someone who is knowledgeable w/ yorkies .... i dont want to risk any more chances.
