| another question Hi, good question about heat. I was wondering that myself. I'm getting a baby girl yorkie, picking her up thursday! She is now 1.5 pounds and her estimate adult weight is 4 pounds. How often do they go in heat? I bought her the puppy undies for when she is bleeding, how long do they usually bleed for? Aww, I know I'm going to feel so bad for her, that time is never fun. I never had a female pet so I don't know what to expect. Christine |

| Maggie's vet said anywhere between 8 months and a year. We will be spaying her around 7 months old. He said that spaying one before the heat cycle begins will help prevent mammary tumors and cancer. That too, and I wasn't too anxious to face twice a year heat cycles.

| question To answer your second question...it is tricky. My girl Ruby came into heat at 14 months for the first time. She was 7 full pounds, mature and well adjusted. I bred her and she had her pups at 16 months which is okay with me. I have had others do the same and not ready. I do not breed a girl under 5 pounds on the first heat no matter her age. If your girl is not at least 5 pounds and 14 months I would wait..JMO Some times the female can have a very slight first heat and the owner misses it..then they come in at 12 to 16 months and it is actually the second season. You will never regret breeding later and allowing the bitch to mature..breeding too early tends to shorten the breeding. |

| Just a quick question since YorkieRose mentioned it.. Some times the female can have a very slight first heat and the owner misses it.. I've just noticed Ginger licking her... crotch a lot lately.. and when i went to look, her vulva is swollen.. and not to be gross, but i looked inside.. and it's pinkish.. and there was dried blood.. (very little) spots around her vulva area... was this supposed to be her first heat and i just missed it? I'm really wanting to learn more information on this, to be quite honest with you all, i first thought they get their periods just as often as us gals.. and just as much as us |

| A while back i was thinking the same thing about my chihuahua....I thought her vulva was looking a bit swollen (she is nearly hairless....so it was easy to notice)...and she was licking ALOT!!!! I did a 'search' on the internet and found a great site explaining the canine heat cycle....I believe it is called "estrus" or "estrace"...or something similar. I tried to do a quick search just now but came up with very little good info. But my chi had her first heat at 7 months and it lasted abour 2 weeks of bleeding....and was not easy to miss!!!!! I believe the 'breeding' part of the cycle is very specific to certain days. Like the first week (or so) is not so good, but the dog will begin doing a "flagging" posture....like rear end up in the air and front legs and chest down on floor.....(kind of like being very playful)....when they are receptive and breedable. And the "breedable" days are something like the 10th day and 12th day... But do a search on the internet to learn more.......the article I read that made sense was really good and was written by a lady who breeds small dogs (can't recall what breed). Try to get connected with a breeder and learn as much as you can ...good luck!! |

| heat My younger female did not go into heat until she was 13 months old. I too was going to skip her first heat (assuming it came earlier), but decided that since she was this age to go ahead and breed her. She did fine. It all just depends on you and your dog. If you think that she is mature enough physically and mentally to handle breeding and that you are educated enough to go through the whole process from start to finish- then I do not see why you cannot go ahead and breed a dog on her first heat if she is over a year old. For the person who was wondering if they missed their dogs "window" of opportunity. Remember- a dog in heat will bleed first (time varies w/different dogs)- when the bleeding or spotting stops a clearer discharge will start to appear. Watch your girl for signs that she is ready to breed- Flagging (tail up in the air twitching) is a good indicator that she is ready. My gals will stand in front of the stud and flag or sometimes get really playful w/ the male. It is actually really cute when they get playful because they act like a puppy again- stretching their legs out in front w/ their rear in the air and bark at the male!
