To answer your second question...it is tricky. My girl Ruby came into heat at 14 months for the first time. She was 7 full pounds, mature and well adjusted. I bred her and she had her pups at 16 months which is okay with me. I have had others do the same and not ready. I do not breed a girl under 5 pounds on the first heat no matter her age. If your girl is not at least 5 pounds and 14 months I would wait..JMO
Some times the female can have a very slight first heat and the owner misses it..then they come in at 12 to 16 months and it is actually the second season.
You will never regret breeding later and allowing the bitch to mature..breeding too early tends to shorten the breeding.
