| Suggestions for HMD diets Hey eveyone, My Sam could possibly have hepatic microvascular dyspalsia (HMD) as her bile acids were 56 (there is no liver shunt). So while we wait for her biopsy, it seems we should aviod red meat and most fish. It seems the best protein for her now is chicken or vegetarian and should be under 20%. Has anybody else had to deal with HMD and what kind of foods do you feed your yorkie with HMD? I live in alberta canada so all of my choices for non-commercial food are listed on this site. Thanks in advance. Kassandra and Sam |

| Hi JediGirl, my yorkie also has MVD/HMD...When will you get the results of the liver biopsy? There are many foods that are safe for liver compromised dogs...You're right about avoiding red meat...It produces the most toxins and should be completely avoided if she does have HMD. Has your yorkie had any UTIs or stones/crystals? If she has, then you definitely want to avoid anything with fish or fishmeal as it is high in purines. Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14 is a prescription food for liver compromised dogs. If no stones/crystals or UTIs, Solid Gold Holistique Blendz might be okay. Natural Balance Vegetarian Formula should be fine...Avoderm Vegetarian, www.naturapet.com lists a food called Karma that the main protein source is chicken. This one might be a good one. The best piece of advice I can give you is to join http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ Their FILES sections has an extensive amount of info on MVD/HMD and the member there have a ton of experience with these issues. There are also some recipes if you prefer to feed homemade food. They might have other suggestions for you. I'll pray for your furbaby!!!

| Wysong senior canned might be okay because the main protein source is chicken and it's 22% protein...If you feed this one, you might want to add veggies or pasta or rice to it to dilute the protein amount. Be careful with canned foods, they SEEM to be lower in protein because they usually state to be under 10%, but in order to calculate the real amount of protein, you have to convert to a dry matter basis. For example, the Wysong senior canned says 5.5% protein and 75% protein. You calculate the amount of protein on a dry matter basis by taking 5.5(amt of protein) divided by 25(the reciprocal of the amount of moisture) and you get .22 = 22% protein on a dry matter basis. Try to stay away form anything with turkey or duck also, as these contain tryptophan which is not recommended for liver compromised dogs. The Wysong senior dry contains turkey.

| Things got messed up - but - will work out for the best. Roxy's post # was 100.9 - so I am first concerned about getting an ultra sound for her and then we will consider TJ too - or - maybe BAT him again Anyway, I had an appt for an outpatient u/s on 9/5 - which I had to change to 9/6 b/c of the time they gave me - it didn't work out with my schedule. Well, I get home last night and I had a message that my appt. has to be re-scheduled (hahaha) I called this AM to do that and upon talking to woman about what exactly was going to happen - She told me that for an 'out patient ultra sound' - I drop off Roxy, they will take her for the u/s and then give her back to me and they will send the results to my Vet. Well, I said I don't feel comfortable with that. I want to speak with a Specialist and such. I said I faxed over the referral and I would think that my Vet would want me to consult and such. So, PS - they are calling my Vet tomorrow to get clarification as to what he wants me to do. Most likely it will be have a consult first and then the u/s - Good thing is that they might have an appt for me this Sat or Mon. So, all in all - I guess it worked out for the best b/c I would have been 'p-oed' if it went down the 'first way' Thanks for asking Sorry to go off the OP original question. |
