| Anal Gland question..do you think and how?..assistance needed Hallee had surgery on her torn ACL 3 weeks ago. Hallee was scheduled for groomer last friday. Groomer wanted to wait one more week before we brought in her because Hallee gets squirmy. Anyway, late last night Hallee started acting really weird...walking/running with her butt down. There is no poo on her so just thought her anal glands are over due since the groomer does this. She has been nipping at her butt too. We put warm wash cloth on her butt last night and then today at lunch. She seemed to like that and would lay on her back while we held it to her butt. So, do you think it is her anal glands and how do we do it if we do it ourselves? Thanks

| Just did a search about anal glands. She is not scooting her butt, but just has it down. Hubby will be home soon and will have him check out her anal glands.

| My vet told me that if you start doing it, you have to continue doing it. I never started with Lillybelle, she's two now and just dont have to. She did scoot on occasion when she was younger but she is two now and it would be very very rare to every see her scoot. Just followed what the vet said. |

| I've never had Lacy's anal glands expressed. I don't think anyone should do it regularly unless it's needed. Most dogs express their anal glands themselves when they poop. If the stool is too soft though, a dog may not express its anal glands. If a dog isn't able to express its anal glands themselves, they can become full, and will need to be expressed. I would have a vet do it as they know the correct way to do it (from the inside). Groomers really do it the wrong way (squeezing the outside). Just because you do it once doesn't mean you will have to keep doing it, but continuously doing it over time will cause you to have to keep up with it. Some dogs have anal gland problems and need them expressed on a regular basis

There are several threads about where you're suppose to position your fingers to do this. It's best to do it while they are bathing then you can wash the nasty stuff right off and be prepared for some stinky stuff!

| If the glands are full and the dog is scooting the glands MUST be emptied. You can do it yourself, but it is best to have the vet show you how. Just the fact of her scooting indicates it is uncomfortable for her. You don't want to wait too long to get her to the vet because full anal glands can become inflamed and infected, which is very uncomfortable, if not downright painful, for your dog. Worst case scenario, the anal glands can burst, and this will cause additional pain for your poor dog and pain for your poor wallet. I've had dogs who never needed it done, dogs who needed it done occasionally, and one who needed it done every three weeks. Of course, I'm older than dirt, so I've had a lot of dogs. I preferred not to do it myself for my last dog, Hailey, because her anal glands were hard to reach, and I didn't want to hurt her. I have done it for other dogs, but I never felt comfortable that I was doing it correctly and that I was getting it all out. I remember some vet somewhere telling me if you don't get it all out, you can cause more problems. Let us know what your vet says. If you're going to do this yourself after the vet teaches you how, invest in a box of disposable gloves, and be careful -- it can shoot out onto you, and has a mighty smell. |

| What are her stools like? Dogs should have solid, relatively hard stools and these should manually express the anal glands. Dogs who have problems with the anal glands usually for one reason or another have soft stools. The problem is, the more you do it the more you have to do it. |

| A co-worker has her Golden Retriever done regularly, but she takes him to the vet. I would have a vet show you, and you do it in front of the vet so he/she can critique your technique. YUCK...but Good Luck! |

| UPDATE: Hallee went yesterday to specialist for follow up on her leg from ACL surgery 3 weeks ago. Her leg is healing just fine. He emptied her anal glands as he said this was the problem with her scooting ect. We were happy that we had gotten her taken care of. After we got home...two hour drive, Hallee was worse than she was. She was licking herself in the private area, scooting, would walk and then just blop her butt down and not move for the longest time. DH came home at lunch time and she had been licking, bitting at her right leg as her fur was soaked there and her leg raw. The space between her vagina and rectum was red. Got her into the regular vet this afternoon. She got more out of her anal glands and thought it was just an irritation, not too much to be worried about. No infection. Gave her a steriod shot and some to give her for 5 days. This was combined with something too that helped with inflammation and irritation. Another scrare that something was really wrong. She has been through so much this month...surgery, fleas, tapework and now this. Hoping we get her well soon and back to her normal self. Of course yesterday after our vet visit we had to stop at PetSmart for a toy run. Our babies are soooooooo SPOILED!

| This is a problem we have with Peanut. We did all the proper research before even touching his little butt. And after learning about everything that we could, we eventually had the vet show us how to do it so that it can be done right. It's best to exress it while giving your little one a bath. It's least umpleasent that way, much like a pimple honestly. If the dog generally has regular (not so soft) poop then the gland should express itself, and it really shouldn't be a consistant problem. But like has been said before, try and not mess with the gland too much, overexpressing the gland can lead to more severe problems
