Poison Ivy - Can they get it from me?

I cleared some brush of my back fence line on Wednesday. I've never had poison ivy before, I even thought I was resistant to it because I've been in it so much over the years and never got it. WRONG! I have several spots on the insides of my forearms. Can my boys catch it from me. When I hold them and love on them I know they are coming in contact with it. Also, when we woke up this morning Oliver licked my arm right on the spot before I realized what he was doing!!! Aaaagggghhhh! I've never heard of dogs getting it, but I wanted to see what everyone thought.

They have never gotten it from me BUT I have gotten it from them! I haven't been in that section of the yard (DH does the yard work) but they have and all of a sudden I've got poison ivy. When they run thru it the oil gets on their coat and then it gets on you and surprise you have poison ivy. I usually end up with it on the backs of my legs and arms (looks like I've been rolling in the bushes )

That's a good question...I'd like to know the answer to that myself.

I wish I had a good story like I was rolling in the bushes!!! But it was plain ole yard work. I just got 3 more spots! It's spreading!! I'm putting alcohol on it, and some anti itch stuff. I feel sorry for people that get it very easily. I can't imagine having it all over really bad!!!! It's not very fun. I gave the boys a bath, I'm hoping they don't get it.

Thanks for being sorry for us (doctor, who does research on it, told me there about 33% of people who get it easy).

I usually get it all over even from a little spot and always have to go to a doctor and take steroid medicines to treat it. Once I got it from my dog's fur. I know p.ivy should never be burned or evaporating oils will damage lungs. Scary. It's not transferable but it will spread over your body if you scratch or put water on it. It's better to use special wash for poison ivy. Nobody of my family or pets eve got it from me.

My sisyer got it from her dog who had been in it. The dog wasn't affected by it,

Nope, far as I know, they can't get it from you but you can from them if it's on them. Thank God, I am "resistant" to poison ivy. I remember helping my dad pull it up in our backyard when I was younger. My mom, on the other hand, used to get a yearly shot to prevent bad outbreaks because she was SO allergic to it that she could be downwind from it and get it. If it blew in her direction, she could actually break out from it. That had to be miserable. Take Aveeno baths.... it works in most cases. Good luck!

I have seen where it has happened to where dog got poison ivy from us. But most of the time it is the dog who is passing it to us without them showing any signs of it.
So far I haven't gotten poison ivy. I have been around it several times and walked right through it and haven't gotten it. I hope it always stays that way. My mom however gets it very easily, from touching clothes to be around the air when someone has burned it.

Poison Ivy is spread from the oil or liquid from the plant. When you get it, wash the area(s) well and wash your hands, clothes, bed linens and anything else you may have touched. If the oil is removed, you will not spread it to yourself or anyone else. Excessively scratching the cleaned areas could possibly get the areas infected, though. Make sure you do not break the skin to prevent infection.

Gosh! I've never had it before but def sounds like a pain in the tush! I'm sorry you caught it as I hear it can be deathly itchy and painful.

I think it's pretty amazing how dogs don't feel the symptoms we can get but they can transfer it to humans..hmm..I guess if it was just on our clothes and we washed them, then we wont ''catch'' it unless our skin touches the "oiled" fabric...yes, I'm thinking aloud..

So I guess, if I'm ever around it, I'd wear longsleeved shirts.
