Just saw a very cool snippet of the Oprah show. Her vet (same vet as Martha Stewart's) says dogs would truly only eat 1-3% carbs in the wild and that we are giving our little carnivores WAY too many carbs.

He said the best diet you can give them is fresh raw meat, then cooked meat (then it goes on to premium canned etc. w/ dry food being last).

He also said this (excerpt from Oprah.com):

"Dr. Marty Goldstein, author of The Nature of Animal Healing, is an expert on holistic pet medicine and the veterinarian caring for Oprah's dog Sophie, who is suffering from kidney failure. Based on Dr. Marty's advice, Oprah says she now feeds her dogs a mixed diet of chicken, beef, lamb, brown rice, potatoes and carrots.

Dr. Marty says most people feed their dogs diets that go against their animal nature. He says a dog that eats only dry food is like a person who eats nothing but carbs!

Dr. Marty says the best thing for a dog to eat is raw meat. Dr. Marty says his own dog, Danny, ate this diet and lived to be 19: "Danny lived on fresh cooked meat and brown rice and carrots, peas, lamb, potatoes. You know, real food. What did they eat in nature? They ate real food."

That's interesting...I took LillyBelle and had her tested, luckily she was okay, but I had been feeding her some of the recall nutro natural canned food, and back in February I remembered her being really sick, she got better, then several weeks later there was the recall..I threw the food out...
I have been cooking up 95% lean ground beef, with a little garlic, tsp of
olive oil, some chopped carrots, peas, and spinach...I cook a weeks worth at a time...she thinks she's in heaven....
(suppose I could add a little cooked brown rice too for good carb)

My cable went out 10 minutes into the show. I think I can catch it tonight at 11 here. I am seriously thinking of feeding mine meat, potatoes and carrots.

Mitzi eats raw meat since a few weeks now and is doing so much better with her allergies and the arthritis! I swear on raw food now...

I could never understand it when people would say, "Oh, you should never give your dog table food."... years ago that's what they ate until the dog food manufactures got in on the act & started producing dog food. I can totally understand to not to give them the bad stuff as in hot dogs, & skin...but I will no longer feel guilty for giving my dogs " table food"..I buy ground chicken & turkey that's 98% fat free & some veggies, now I have to get the brown rice added in & will continue to feed them this .....

For those of you who do feed their puppies this type of food, how much do you feed them? Right now I feed Charlie and Henry 1/4 c 2x's a day w/ a tsp-tbsp of a ground meet w/ carrots or another veggie mixed in...They have not been liking the hard food too much lately so I was thinking of doing the same thing...I just feel so uncomfortable buying any type of food for them lately...Also does anyone ever give their puppies soup bones from the butcher? I gave them each a small one the other night and only let them have it for a short time and when we went for our walk they both thru-up...I am thinking it may be too rich for their 6 month old tummies...Any suggestions or thoughts on this?

If anyone decides to go with raw meat, then buy free range beef and lamb because they have not been injected with hormones and fed feed from the rendering plants. Also just give a tiny bit for a few days to see if they can tolerate it. My girls can't eat raw meat at all. Gives them bloody diarrhea. I cook the beef, lamb and veal liver and add it to rice, lentils and split peas that I cook together, and then carrots, broccoli and whole garlic. Of course the broccoli, carrots and garlic are put in a food processer and chopped real small.

Serving do you feed them?

Also what does the whole garlic do for them?

You give them RAW meat?! For whatever reason I never thought you actually meant raw as in not cooked meat. Honestly I don't think I could do it. When you cook the meat it kills the bad stuff that be on it. I know they are dogs and they are different from us.. I just don't know that I could feed raw.

Zada is 8 pounds (a pound overweight due to a thyroid condition were working on right now) and Azrael is 6 pounds. They each get 1/4 of a cup of food in the morning and in the evening. For lunch they get non-fat yogurt and fruit. I don't give them "snacks" but maybe twice a week, but they get femur bones to chew on every day.
Garlic helps to tone up the digestive tract and discourage worms and other parasites, including fleas.
All the grocery stores sell ground turkey and chicken. Fowl is ok for the dogs because they are not pumped full of hormones and other chemicles.
I do want to add that there are those who say feed raw meat and those who say cook the meat. Frankly it's up to you. Personally, I'll stick to cooking it. Better safe than sorry is what I live by.
