You can go to balanceit.com and buy a recipe.
I wouldn't use the Balance IT L that they will tell you to use.
I'd use the combination of human vitamins and minerals they will give you instead.

Dog Birthday Cake

1 Attachment(s)
A friend of mine gave me this recipe, which is safe for dogs. I made this the other day for my baby's first birthday. She loved it!! The humans had some too. It was pretty good.

Dog Peanut Butter Cake

1 Cup Flour
1 Tsp. Baking Soda
1/4 Cup Peanut Butter
1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
1 Egg
1/3 Cup Honey
1 Cup Shredded Carrots

Mix the flour and baking soda together. Add remaining ingredients. Blend well. Pour into 8" round or square baking pan coated with PAM. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Cool completely. Frosting can be made with 1 cup Cottage Cheese and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter pureed in blender or food processor. Frost when cool. If you don't have a cake decorating kit, you can take some peanut butter in a ziploc bag, push it to the corner, seal it and cut the very tip of the corner off. Then you can write your baby's name on the cake. Here's a picture of mine. (I used the ziploc bag, and it was real easy).

Frozen Tasty Treats

This recipe I invented for my dog out of necessity - The vet thought she may have pancreatitis, so after her bouts of diarrhea, the vet suggested she rest her digestive system with white rice and low fat cottage cheese.

I fixed short grain white rice in my $14 rice cooker from Target, and mixed it with low fat organic cottage cheese (just in case she was sensitive to chemicals after coming off of i.v.) However, as a working mama, I couldn't mix it fresh everytime! So I made batches up over the weekend and froze it for a few days. She loved it! It was also easier to mix thawed cubes into her regular food as a way to slowly reintroduce her regular food.

1 cup cooked and cooled white rice
1/2 cup low fat organic cottage cheese

Mix in bowl, spoon into icecube trays, freeze, and serve.

Hello Everyone!

I just thought that I'd share the recipe my kids and I made for the dogs tonight.

Gingerbread Men for Dogs

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 cup dark molasses
1/4 water
1 large egg
2 tbsp canola or olive oil

Combine dry ingredients, then whisk wet ingredients seperately. Combine the 2. Roll out 1/4 inch thick. Bake at 350 for 12-15 mins until firm.

Up to 10 pounds - 1 to 11/2 cups
11 to 20 pounds - 2 to 3 cups
21 to 40 pounds - 4 cups
For each additional 20 pounds, add 2 cups.

BRAVO'S BODACIOUS HEARTY BURGER STEW

1 pound ground beef or turkey
1/2 pound millet
1/2 pound spinach, chopped
1/2 pound carrots, coarsely chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons kelp powder
4 to 6 cups spring water
Yield: About 9 cups.

Combine all ingredients in a stainless-steel pot with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the carrots are tender. Remove from heat, and allow to cool.
With an electric hand mixer or a food processor, blend into a puree.
Using plastic baggies or yogurt containers, divide into meal-sized portions. Refrigerate three days' worth and freeze the rest.

Hi, I am new to this site and it seems a little overwhelming, so I hope I am doing this right. I am really confused on what to feed my new yorkie. My last (the love of my life) I had to put down because of a collasped trechia. Before that I had given him a soup bone and he got acute pancretitus. The vet said it was due to the fat or the marrow in the bone. She said Yorkies can not digest fat very well and I don't want to make the same mistake again. Most people tell me to just feed him dry food and nothing else. He is a little picky and a little on the thin side. I am afraid if I just feed him dry he will get to skinny and if I feed him people food he will get sick. He also is doing the reverse sneeze thing which is really freaking me out because I think that is what brings on the trech problems. Can I get your take on these things? You sound like you have had yorkies for some time?
Thanks for any info.

I haven't seen Ceibasmom post in a long time.
Fat can trigger pancreatitis but there is no reason to avoid people food altogether. :) There are certain things they can have and certain things they can't. I will say, just because you find a recipe in this thread doesn't mean it's safe. There are some I would never, ever feed. You can give all dry food. You can give canned or mix the two. You could do homecooked with the help of a nutritionist... Lots and lots of Yorkies reverse sneeze. I have never heard that it can cause collapsed trachea. Mine does it occasionally and I think her trachea is okay.

I'm sorry about your Yorkie. :(

Try some goats milk. I think it is a miracle come true for my dogs. I can't afford to give it to the adults very often but I have had 2 puppies from different mothers almost die from the mothers losing their milk. I am amazed at how well they did when I started feeding them the goats milk. For some reason we have a lot of problems with low blood sugar in our babies and the goats milk works wonders. It will put weigh on my adults but it is not cheap when you have as many dogs as I do. You can find it in the baking aisle in the grocery store. Sylvia

SPOT'S CHICKEN STEW

21/2 pounds whole chicken or turkey (bones, organs, skin and all)
1/4 cup chopped fresh garlic
1 cup green peas
1 cup coarsely chopped carrots
1/2 cup coarsely chopped sweet potato
1/2 cup coarsely chopped zucchini
1/2 cup coarsely chopped yellow squash
1/2 cup coarsely chopped green beans
1/2 cup coarsely chopped celery
1 tablespoon kelp powder
1 tablespoon chopped rosemary
11 to 16 cups spring water

For dogs only: Add 8 ounces whole barley and 6 ounces rolled oats, and adjust the water content to 16 cups spring water or enough to cover the ingredients. (The grains are not recommended for cats.)

Yield: 20 cups.
Combine all ingredients in a 10-quart stainless-steel stockpot with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, then turn down heat as low as possible and simmer for 2 hours; carrots should be very soft.
Remove from heat, let cool, and debone the chicken.
With an electric hand mixer or a food processor, blend the ingredients into a puree. The stew should be slightly thicker for dogs and more soupy for cats.
Using plastic baggies or yogurt containers, divide into meal-sized portions. Refrigerate three days' worth and freeze the rest.

A very large amount one time or small amounts over time have been blamed on hemolytic anemia, asthmatic attacks and dermatitis. Garlic is a member of the onion family and it does what onions do (toxic wise to dogs) just to a lesser degree. We skip it altogether. It isn't worth the risk.

Do you have a favorite receipe for dog biscuits? I've tried the ones from Blue Buffalo and Solid Gold...Prince would eat a tiny bit of each, and that is it.

I do a gingerbread/molasses recipe most and I just made banana muffins for Ellie. I can find the links if you would like them.

The gingerbread recipe is here:

I leave out the cloves and Ellie eats them without the honey.

The banana muffin one, I did use a recipe for but changed so many things. Most recipes with dog healthy ingredients would work.

Princes mom 01-22-2009 08:09 AM

Thank you so much. I plan to make the banana muffins this weekend.

Well, what do you know. I found it.
Banana Carrot Muffin Dog Treats Will Make Your Dog Happy

I did vary from the recipe quite a bit though.
I would NOT use the nutmeg.
I used all qhite flour because that's what we have on hand.
I replaced the carrot with mashed apple...
Because I did change up the recipe, the muffins smelled so good but they were a wet and chewy texture in the middle. I thought they were too wet to leave at room temp., so I froze them and thaw one at a time and put them in the fridge. I'm sure it would be better if you stuck to the original recipe.

Has anyone tried any of the recipes on this website and used the BalanceIt supplement? Buster loves the food but doesn't like the grainy texture of the supplement. Any suggestions to make the supplement more invisible in his food?

Balance-It is the only line of all-in-one supplements for homecooking. If you don't use it, you'll have to use several supplements together to get the same effect.

I don't like Balance IT Canine because it contains menadione. I use Balance IT K but this is reserved for dogs with medical issues, so I'm not sure everyone should use it.

Balance IT has their own site and they can give you the amount of Balance IT you should use and the amount of human vitamins and minerals you should use, so you would have a choice. However, one of the human supplements they want you to add isn't without problems, so I see it as a no win situation. If you do get a recipe from Balance ITs site, I would not recommend the one with cottage cheese because I thought it made Ellie extrea thirsty (could be wrong though).

By the way, petdiets.com is Ellie's nutritionist's website. :)

Menadione

Thanks for your info. I didn't know about menadione. I don't understand why they would use it if it is harmful, even if it is in a tiny concentrate.

I was told the Canine K supplement is more grainy than the regular, and Buster doesn't like the texture. They told me to dissolve it in Karo syrup to get rid of that feeling.

What is the difference between the two supplements?

I made him the recipes with chicken and beef.

It is possible that the amino acid profile is different between the two. The K also doesn't contain menadione. It is along the lines of ethoxyquin in that there may be no negative effects reported at the rate it is given in the supplement. I just try to avoid it either way.

How do you know....

I love all these great sounding recipes for homemade doggy treats etc...but how do you know if you need to suplement calcium, protein etc....or how much to give, etc. I don't want to "overdose" my little one one these things and make her be sick....how do you know?

You don't need to worry about giving supplements unless homecooked food or commercial treats are more than 10% of their diet. If any of these recipes are telling you to add vitamins and you aren't going to give it as a main food source, I would not add them.

I have heard that honey is fine but since we have the raw and unprocessed type around here, I just feel safer leaving it out. I don't see any reason to use cloves and since nutmeg and rosemary are being questioned as seizure causing right now, I wold like to wait for more research to be done on these spices.

I'm not sure on the freezing thing. I've never tried it.
I keep them for a week or two just like human cookies but who knows if that is really healthy or not...

cdawnfine 02-11-2009 10:29 AM

Thanks for the info, I was at a pet expo this weekend and got some cookies for Milo you would think I was giving him Crack the boy went nuts for them but they were very expensive so I want to try to make them myself. :)
