Garlic Garlic is toxic to dogs. From peteducation.com: Both garlic and onion can be toxic to dogs, cats, and other animals. Cats appear to be more sensitive than dogs. In dogs and cats, onions and garlic can cause a breakdown of the red blood cells, resulting in Heinz body anemia. The bulbs, bulbets, flowers, and stems of the garlic and onion can all be toxic. There are some human baby foods that have onion in them, and it is not recommended to feed them to pets. The very small amounts of garlic that are present in some commercial pet foods have not been shown to cause any problems. |

I would not give dogs or cats garlic or onions. Even in small amounts, why risk it? I don't know why so many dog foods and treats contain garlic and onion powder. Just because dogs like it, does not mean these companies should gamble with even tiny amounts. Other foods that are toxic include raisins, grapes, chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, and mushrooms. |

though I did just read somewhere on here that wheat germ is really bad for dogs? I tried to research it and didnt really find anything. I found it kind of strange because wheat is used in a lot of dog products... |
Are these soft when they come out of the oven? My poor baby doesn't have teeth. |

Vitamins? My question is, Does anyone buy and add a vitamin supplement and omega 3 ( fish oil) to their recipes? My daughter boils white chicken tenders and potatoes separately. She then portions the chicken up as well as the potatoes. Then she adds raw carrot pieces. To this, once a day, is added a vitamin supplement ( she crushes it and puts it in with the food ) and the omega 3 oil. Her 3 dogs, a yorkie, maltese, and shih tzu are doing well on this diet. I have been feeding my 2 yorkies Evo with added boiled chicken tenders ( a few tiny pieces). The older girl seems fine with this diet. I am having issues with my younger yorkie (age 2). She is being tested for a liver shunt or maybe other liver issues. This has been ongoing since Deember. I have asked on this forum about the high protein content of Evo. Some responders feel it is too high for yorkies. Could this food be the reason for her problems? Currently, she is on the IAMS low residue kibble. She already has had an ultrasound ( all appeared well) and will have a scintigaphy test next week. I am looking for a premium very high quality kibble that has whatever protein content a yorkie should have. I did not realize that high protein is not a good thing. I was trying to avoid grain because I am afraid of all the bad quality grain ingredients some companies use and that were in the recall. Royal Canine has food made for yorkies. I am not crazy about the listed ingrediants including corn. Maybe I should just forgo the kibble of any kind and feed my 2 girls what my daughter feeds her 3. Any comments? DAB |

100% homecooking is fine but a multi vitamin isn't enough. The cal/phos ratio has to be balanced and some other things have to be taken into consideration. It would be an incomplete and unbalanced diet which can be very dangerous. I homecook for Ellie and use Balance IT K. |
OK, I just started home cooking for Nolee. I do use a small amount of garlic in his food. My question is do I need to give him a vitamin supplement also? I read the above answer, but do not fully understand? Thanks!:p |

my sunni thanks. i am a newby with an 8 yr. old felmale yorkie sweetheart. i love her to death but she has developed a few problems hopefully someone out there can help me with. first, she has a collapsing trachea which would require surgery to fix, not an option at this time. second she weigh 7 #'s and should wei 5-6#'s. she started have this huge budah belly and its always there.shes not gassy. i've researched food and put her on every diet or senior food out there, blue buffaloe being the last one, with no weight loss at all and a huge belly. so i started making my own homemade dog food recipe, which i found on line. she absoutely loves it, belly is a little smaller but not much wight loss. she can't excercise much because of her trachea. we go for slow walks and sometimes i put her on the treadmill for 10 minutes. she has been vet checked for everything. i took her in to have her teeth cleaned and they wouldn't do the surgery because of her trachea! so i'm trying to get weight off of her . she gets 200 calories per day. its a mix of elk burger, heart, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and veggies split up 3 X's a day. i also ad missing link (vitamin) anybody out there got any ideas for my sunni? |

I love this post. What good ideas! |
I know onion and garlic are bad, but why do people add garlic to some recipes? Some boxed eggs have onion powder in them. |
Dangers of Xylitol Hi Everyone, I just stumbled across this article on the dangers of our furbabies digesting Xylitol. There have been several dogs who died after digesting things like gum and baked goods. Hopefully most of you are already aware of this, but if you aren't, check out the following article. http://www2.aspca.org/site/DocServer...df?docID=10462 |

Homecooking is just fine but the above isn't a balanced diet and shouldn't be fed long term. |
