There is only 1 website where a lady speaks of it on the internet. I know w/ all these beautiful yorkies on this board there has to be someone who knows about this and how to cure it. Does anyone else have a yorkie w/ black around the edges of their ears???????...Please help if you can... Blessings.......... |

| Leather ear, winter ear I had a yorkie I adopted who was older that had this. All I could find was Terri Shumsky's info from the shooterdog site, which is probably what you found. I tried the tea tree oil stuff that she recommended and also lotrimin (I think AF) the clear liquid in the little bottles for athlete's foot. It did eventually go away. It took probably about a month of applying it and rubbing it in twice a day on the ears and the nose (did it affect your dog's nose?). My vet had never heard of it and said that it was probably genetic, some dogs are just that way. But I tried it anyway and the hair all grew back. It is a fungus that is brought on by cool temperatures. It was suggested to me by another yorkie breeder to not shave the ears anymore after that so they would stay warmer. I would also recommend keeping them OUT of cold temperatures for prolonged periods of time. The ears and bridge of nose do tend to get cold first. Let us know how your dog does. Do you have pictures?

| How about a trip to the vet? They can help you much better, as they can see and touch your pup's ears to determine what's going on.

| I did a little research on the web. You may have already come across all this, but I didn't know. Hopefully it will help you out? Why does my yorkie have black slimmy ears? Pure silk yorkies will get leather ear, soft coated yorkies do not. Leather ear does affect silky coated Yorkies. It can be caused from colder weather and high humidity and can be responsible for hair loss on the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail and leaves a slimy black substance in those places. Some people think it is a fungus and some think it is a "rabbit mite". What I use to help this problem is #1 All Systems Tea Tree Oil. You can buy it from The Show Dog Store. The #1 Systems Tea Tree Oil Tea Tree Oil is a spray natural product which is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, antiseptic, analgesic. Great for insect bites, hot-spots, fungus infections, cures all type of sores. It contains a natural sovent which allows it to be absorbed into the skin along with its healing properties. http://www.northern-lites.com/info.htm ======================== Q. My dog has black slimy ears now and I was told this was winter ear. What can I do about it? A. Leather ear, slick ear, English ear, black ear does affect some toy dogs, namely Yorkies, rather seriously. It can be responsible for hair loss on the ears, hocks, and the end of the tail and leaves a slimy black substance in those places. Some people think it is a fungus and some think it is a "rabbit mite". Frankly, having spent hundreds of dollars in the 70's to cure it, I still can't tell you what it is but I can tell you how to keep from getting it or how to get rid of it once you've "got it". At the first sign of black around the edges of the ear, wipe the ear with "dog-o-dontic pads" dipped in alcohol. Bathe in Betadine or Plexadine Shampoo, paying particular attention to the ears, end of tail, and hocks. Use Ear Guard by Gerard Pellham regularly in the ears and cover the ears, hocks, and end of tail with a thin coating of Lotrimin 1%....no other kind of Lotrimin...just Lotrimin 1%, every day until the problem is solved! You will notice the ear begin to get very dry. Stop using the Lotrimin 1% if the ears get too dry! Another product which I have recently used for this problem is #l All Systems Tea Tree Oil and I'm happy to say that it works! This stuff is also really good to spray on "wrappers" as it is not too tasty! Softer coated dogs never seem to have a problem with this but the silky coated dog with a lower skin temperature seems to have a problem when colder weather and high humidity prevail. Keep the dogs warmer and wash them at least once a week using Betadine or Iodine shampoo in those areas which are susceptible. You will be in control if you follow these instructions. It is also a good idea to have your veterinarian do a thyroid function test on dogs with these symptoms because some dogs with this problem also have a low thyroid function and medication may help the situation and keep the dog from becoming sterile and the bitch from having unusually small litters. http://tsfannymaelivershuntfund.home...com/QandA.html ======================== My yorkies ears are covered in black stuff, what can I do? The black coating is referred to as Leather Ear, or Winter Ear, and it is thought to be a fungus. What I have found useful in clearing it up is washing the ears daily with head and shoulders shampoo and letting it set on the ears for about 5 minutes, then rinsing if off. Within a few days the black can be peeled off the ear. Another remedy that is supposed to be good is to use alcohol to wipe the ear down and coat with Lotrimin 1%, doing this daily until the condition is gone. http://yorkieviews.com/faq.htm Good Luck!! |

| Little Bit.......Here is her picture, you can see it around her ears edges........When I first started treating her w/ lotrimin he ear edge flaked off. The black is alot thinner now. It seems like it is taking forever to go away. I started using tea tree oil. Her ears are not slimy like that article says, and I do not believe it is any where else.........Do you think it is on her nose??????????.......... Thanks everyone for your help...... |

Mine never had slimey ears either. Just no hair and darkened pigment. It does take a long time. Keep at it. The hair does grow back eventually. I continued it until it was about an eight of an inch long before I stopped. I wanted to be sure it would stay gone. So far, so good.

| Edie had this once, years ago. I took her to the vet and we put some antibiotic cream on it. It cleared up, but it took a while, and it took even longer for the hair to grow back. I don't know what the cause was, but it was definitely leather ear. She never got it on her nose. Do a search on Yorkie talk for leather ear. We have discussed it a few times. |

| Brandy got leather ear last year. The edges of the ears turned black and the hair fell out in little clumps. I cleaned the blackened areas with cotton balls and rubbing alchohol. Then rubbed in some of the lotrimin 1% antifungal cream. I did it about twice a day for a couple weeks. Within a week or two I noticed she was not losing anymore hair and the cotton balls looked clean after cleaning her ears where the first few times they got a bit gray. The hair grew back completely in a month or so. So far this winter there has been no sign of it returning.

| I think the tea tree oil works best. I have used it by rubbing it on thick and leaving it soak for 10 minutes before a bath. Then I use a shampoo like T-gel with a soft baby brush on the ears (brush gets the circulation going) in the bath. Dry them off well and then clean the ears daily with the oil on a cotton ball. This has worked for me better than anything. |

| Ok, now I'm convinced Mr. Big has leather ear on his ears. What's going to happen to me? He gets up on my chest and leans against my face. I will nibble on his ear. So.... am I going to get leather tongue? All my tastebuds going to fall off? Hmmm, Do you suppose it might rub off on those pesky whiskers that are growing on my chin? Menopause, you know? ROTFLMBO!!!! Sylvia |
