| Does anyone get their dog's vaccinated at the pet stores? Hi, Anyone out there get their dog's vaccinated at the pet stores? Petsmart and Petco advertise in their flyer. My vet is getting so darn expensive, I thought I would give it a try since it's cheaper. Please advise

| I have with dogs other than Yorkies in the past. I also go to the yearly vaccination clinic put on by my vet each spring. The only thing with these is that you don't get the exam. With Yorkies, I'm thinking that is pretty important cause so many things can go wrong. I'm still debating here.... I know Kaya has had reactions in the past, so I would want her to get hers at the vet's office. I'm beginning to think nothing could ever hurt Tinka the Tank....so I may go with my vet's yearly clinc for her. This probably wasn't much help, just wanted to let you know what I do! |

| I could be totally wrong, but I've been told it this type of vaccination is mechanical in nature. The vet's are not cruel, but they aren't tremendously loving either and the smallest dose they give with the vaccines is what the government mandates (which is for a 20-25 lb dog). As most yorkies are much smaller than that, and many have reactions when given more than one vaccine at a time, I personally would be very hesitant to vaccinate in this manner - particularly if your pup was to have a reaction and they don't offer any follow-up.

When Piper got vaccinated, buy the time we got back home she was vomiting. Our vet had me bring her back right away. They kept her for a couple of hours to watch her at no charge. My sister had her dog done at one of the stores, when he got sick they had her bring him to a ER.

| I load up my zoo and go to those shot clinics. I haven't taken my Yorkie because she has seen the vet already so much that we took care of it there. I also got two rescue kittens (males) that will be fixed soon. Plan on going to a neuter clinic for that. All my zoo see the vet for so many other things that it is a way for me to save money. Also, I with so many animals I like having them all on the same schedule.

| I don't know if the petstore clinics are the same as what I am thinking of...but are these the low cost/free clinics that we are talking about? I won't take any of mine to those, but only b/c I had asked my cousin, a Vet, how they were able to do the low cost/free vaccination clinics. He explained it this way. The clinics are basically given the shots that are about to expire. The only the manufactures can't sell to vets b/c they won't take them. Also, a lot of times they don't keep the shots in the proper conditions, i.e. no refrigeration, too cold, ect. He stated he used to do them for the town, until he relieved all the shots were past their expiration. I don't know if this is true everywhere, or just where my cousin was volunteering, but it makes me paraniod.

| pet vaccinations Well, now you people really have me thinking if this is a good idea after all. My vet does check them over and weigh them before the shots. Plus, I don't get charged an office call. I didn't realize the vet's at the pet store didn't do these things. I am glad I posted this question. Thanks for the info.

I took anna for her third set of shots, deworming, and had her a checkup and got her weighed all for arround 25 dollars. |

| I live in a small town so vets arent expensive here. Anna had eye surgery and got eye drops all for 92 dollars. I love small town life. My aunt has 2 cats in kansas city and took one to get fixed a while back and cost her 250-300 dollars and i took my grandmas cat in to get fixed and it cost me 3o-35 dollars. |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Small town life sounds great at those prices . I usually vaccinate at the vet. Lex is due for his annual booster and rabies and lulu will be due for her rabies. I am going to take them to petco and get the mobile clinic to do it. My vet charges $42 for the visit and then the cost of the vaccines. It adds up and it's just rediculous. I checked it out and the people that are administering the shots on site one is a vet and the other a tech. No matter who gives the shot your dog can get a reaction. Lulu's last shot was given by my vet and she got a bit of the runs from it afterwards. There is no guarantee no matter who administers it.
