I'm going to start off by saying that we have an appointment at the vet tomorrow but I'm still curious. I think Lexi has a cold. She has these sneezing fits that go on for 1 or 2 minutes at a time. I thought it was an alergy to a new throw rug i just got because it started shortly after she first stepped on it but now I'm not so sure. Also, and here's where my curiousity comes in, she has had a croopy type cough for several days now. Maybe one or two attachs a day where she just stands and coughs/wheezes. She can't even move while this goes on. But quickly as it comes, it goes. I've seen posts about kennel cough. What is that? She hasn't been in a kennel.

I AM CURIOUS. I JUST BOUGHT A BABY YORKIE. HE IS 3 MONTHS OLD. HE ALSO STARTED WITH THAT CROOPY COUGH. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TOMORROW. HOW DID YOU APPOINTMENT GO AT THE VET?

Bella is 17 weeks old and she first came down with kennel cough when she was 11 weeks old. They started her on an antibiotic for about a week and it came back. She then was put back on an atibiotic for 2 weeks but still coughs a little usually earlier in the morning when she wakes up and it's a real croupy cough. I too thought maybe it was allergies, but the vet told me even though the kennel cough infection is gone it can tke upt to a couple months to get it completed out of her system.

Kennel Cough is like a common cold to us humans but can be much nastier in tiny dogs

You know ever since Cordelia came back from Obedience school she sneezes more and she has like a cough or something. It sounds like when a cat has a hairball. I think I better call the vet.

Hello everyone - thanks for your posts. Here's the update on Lexi's vet visit. We actually saw the surgeon as opposed to our regular vet who was out of the office. The surgeon gave her a clean bill of health and said that the heart and lung sounds were all healthy. He said that yorkies are suspectible to collapsed trachea (which I had read on this forum numerous times). What he told me that I didn't know is that this is a condition that can happen even if you've never put a colar on your pet. I have ever only used harnesses on Lexi because she is such a tugger. She may as well stand upright on her hind legs and walk when we go out. He said that the coughing is probably happening when she gets over excited, something I had just begun to notice. He said for me to keep her from getting excited. I said OK but was thinking 'yeah right'. I even mentioned that she had almost choked to death on a bone a couple of weeks earlier because I though maybe she had a scratch or something in her throat from it but he never looked down there. I don't think they do that in dogs.

As for the sneezing, he said she may have allergies and to keep her in the house when the pollen count is high. I can tell you that this past weekend must have had some of the highest pollen counts yet. I was MISERABLE. Lexi however, enjoyed herself to tears strolling through the park and playing in the yard. So who knows? I'll just employ some of mama's good sense and use my best judgement for her. Always worked before.

THATS GREAT NEWS FOR LEXI.

I JUST BROUGHT MASON TO THE VET TODAY. THE CROOPY COUGH TURNED OUT TO BE AN UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION. THEY HAD TO GIVE MY BABY A SHOT OF ANTIBIOTIC, AND NOW I HAVE TO GIVE AMOXIL TWICE A DAY FOR 1 WEEK. I AM STILL A LITTLE NERVOUS AFTER READING ALL THIS THINGS ON "KENNEL COUGH AND COLLAPSED TRACHEA." HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD TO GO THROUGH THIS? ITS VERY HARD CAUSE HIS APPETITE IS POOR BUT HE IS STILL VERY ACTIVE AT POINTS IN THE DAY.
