| The only reason they say that it should be used intermittantly is because it's so low in protein...I would keep her on it indefinitely, but after a couple of months, slowly start adding protein that's safe for your baby, but not too much... Only use protein that is safe ie. egg, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc. If they don't get enough protein long-term it can cause other problems. Hope this answers your question!

| I sent you a long PM. I am trying a new dog food now by Evanger's Dog & cat food. The one I bought today has 8% protein. Most dog foods have 18-22% which is way too high for Cookie to have. Since he has had no symptoms I stopped the Hills LDbecause he hated it ! I also cooked him a special low protein recipe but after several months he was just tired of it and so was I lol. The canned food I got was Turkey Chunk Stew 8% protein.Turkey Broth, turkey, carrots, potatoes, brownrice, and a bunch of vitamins that I won't list lol Kosher dog food.No preservatives,no artificial color,no salt added They have two types of food( loaf form and whole form) The site on back of the can www.evangersdogfood.com Genie, Cookie & Lola |

| You Are Wise You are so wise to have taken you pup to an internist. I know it is an investment, but you will never be sorry that your pup received the best possible care. He is lucky to have you for his Momma.

| Is the 8% a canned food or a dry food? If it is a wet food, then the actual dry matter protein is much higher than that, probably much higher than the recommended amount...Be careful with canned foods, as they seem to be lower in protein because they're usually under 10%, but you have to calculate it without the moisture content. Example: Food A has 9% protein, 6% fat, 1.5% fiber, 80% moisture To find out the guaranteed analysis (dry matter) take 9 (because that's the percentage of protein) and divide by 20 (because that's the reciprocal of the moisture content) and that = 45% So that canned food that you think is 9% is actually 45% protein on a dry matter basis in this particular example. This will vary with different dog foods because this all depends on the moisture content.

| Wow! I am impressed. That was very interesting and great information to store. I don't feed Mickey wet dog food because of the tartar problem in Yorkies. I do brush Mickey's teeth, but some days I don't get to it. I prefer giving him dry. Thank you again. I read this posting to my husband and he said, "Dang! she broke it down!" Smile! Dee & Mickey

| LOL Thanks, you just made me smile! I have learned sooo much on the liver shunt/mvd support group. I have read through so many of the files just to read up on everything, as Miko's condition scares me so much. There's a wealth of information there! If you have any questions, please ask away.
