Is the 8% a canned food or a dry food? If it is a wet food, then the actual dry matter protein is much higher than that, probably much higher than the recommended amount...Be careful with canned foods, as they seem to be lower in protein because they're usually under 10%, but you have to calculate it without the moisture content.
Example: Food A has 9% protein, 6% fat, 1.5% fiber, 80% moisture
To find out the guaranteed analysis (dry matter) take 9 (because that's the percentage of protein) and divide by 20 (because that's the reciprocal of the moisture content)
and that = 45%
So that canned food that you think is 9% is actually 45% protein on a dry matter basis in this particular example.
This will vary with different dog foods because this all depends on the moisture content.
