Question #1:Anal Glands My 5 mth old Benji has a slightly swollen/protruding anus (hate to say it) Sometimes I think he is trying to bite at it. I was wondering if he could need his glands expressed. What do you guys think? If so, has anyone done this themselves, does a groomer do it, or just the vet. I don't mind the vet expense, of course, it's just the hassle of crowded offices and waits, etc. Thank you, from Benji

| We were having the same problem with lexi when we first brought her home. I called the vet and he said to wait a few days to see if she could clear it herself. I asked around to see who else express the glands and I was told petsmart does it. I never checked into it bc she took care of it herself but it might be worth looking into if a groomer can do it. Good luck. SORRY your tushie hurts.

Thanks Laura. Benji does have an appointment with the groomer and I guess I'll ask her what she thinks and if she does that. He's not in any pain and is pooping, but he is uncomfortable at times and I hate when my babies have any discomfort. Also, it seems like the yorkies do a lot of scratching compared to the others. I have a doxie, lab and shepherd and they hardly ever scratch. Benji scratches everyday. His ear, his face, his back end, back legs. I thought it was food allergies, but he's like this no matter what kind of food he eats. My last yorkie was like this too. Thanks for listening.

hope this helps I have two yorkies both are male and clean their anal glands myself when they need it,I don't mind paying the vet bill but like you said it can be a hassle with all our busy lives,so i asked the vet to show me she did and it is so simple. Here's how i do it you hold your yorkie like you would be putting him or her in a headlock with your right arm with your left arm free you put your thumb and pointer finger just below his anus like yor getting ready to squeeze a pimple sort of and just below his anus on both sides are little pea size balls of this stuff that needs emptied these little ones it's hard for them to do on their own.Anyways just give them a squeeze and gently push up like you would be having it come out his anus and their shold be a very foul smelling brownish liquid come out and i promise you they will love you for it my older yorkie i have to stick my finger in his butt then squeeze same method just use gloves and vaseline if your unsure still their is websites that have actual diagrams on how to do this just type in something like how to express my dogs anal glands and something shold come up hope this helped linda

Thanks from me, too. I am going to try it today when I get home. Mine are always doing helicopters, as we call it, rubbing their butt around in circles.
