| Bella not eating her food; Bella, Has a small liver shunt vet says no surgery, however the food they have her on she will not eat. (go figure) They have her on canned Purina NF Kidney Function food. Is there anything out there that she can have that she might eat. She lost so much weight when she was sick I know that I have to keep her protein intake low. I give her baby food chicken mixed with her food and she goes for it sometimes. She weighs 4 pounds now, she was down to 2.6 pounds when she was sick. She is bouncing and happy girl again just want to keep her that way. Need some input to keep her well our family loves her so much it is hard to see her not able to eat what she likes. If anyone has any ideas I would be willing cook anything to help her keep well Kbnana |

| Ask your Vet if you can mix a little Braunschweiger in her food, picky dogs love it, and you can get them to eat almost anything with about a 1/4 of a slice mashed in their food. I call it Liver Worst. It contains 15g of fat,6 gm Saturated Fat, 570mg. of Soduim, 3gm of Cabohydrate, 3g of sugar, and 8g,of Protein Vitiman A 100%, Vit. C %, Calcuim 0%, Iron 20% Good luck, I have a little girl that has IBD and she has to have a low protien diet, I cook for her every day, she is 10 years old, and weighs 8 lbs. Please make sure you ask your Vet before trying anything new. I hope he will let you use a little Liver Worst, a little goes a long way, and my dogs love it, I use it for thier pills when they are taking them, and I use a little in all my puppy food to get them started to eat. Best of luck, you seem to be doing something right, you little one is gaining weight, so hang in there and enjoy your special little fur baby! |

| Here's a link to a homemade diet, but check with your vet. If she went from 2 pounds to 4 pounds the diet must be good for her and she must be eating enough. http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs...Liver_diet.pdf |

| Bella on the mend; Just wanted to say thank you to all who replied with ideas for getting Bella to eat. We are hopefully past the the bladder infection and now working on her liver problem, the vet did give me Lactutose to help her liver process protein. And he said if we could find something that her liver could handle maybe since she is so young and we could get her a healthy life. I am going to try some of the suggestions for low protein diet homemade the commercial ones she will not eat and I find when she stops eating thats when we have problems. Thank you so much for the info on the homemade food recipes and I will keep my fingers crossed and start cooking! KB |

| Hope Bella is continuing to improve on her new diet. I'm sure the addition of the lactulose will make a big difference in her health also, along with a low protein diet. Post some pictures and give us some updates from time to time and let us know what is working for you. |

Very alarming will be calling the vet in the a.m. She eats well than turns her nose up at her new food. She has just finished with a severe bladder infection gosh where did that come from? Vet did ultra sound no stones yippie! Wondering the two meds has caused her gums to turn to almost brown. She seems to be full of energy and her bouncy self will post some pics from work we live out in the country and we are still on dial up very slow still cannot get high speed out here. Thank you so much! I have been trying to find the right formula to keep her well, on the food poop watch everyday. We will figure this out. KB

| The dark red gums doesn't sound good at all. I have never heard of it being related to liver or kidney disease though, just bloat and high temperatures. You definitely need to make the vet aware of this as soon as possible. I'll keep you both in my prayers. Update when you can. |

Hope Bella is feeling better soon, I just want to tell you that my Gucci had liver shunt and was operated on this past August. She was on lactutose and they had put her on Hills prescription L/D, for low protein, mention this to your vet. Gucci is able to eat regular dog food now, but since she is doing well with the l/d diet I have decided to keep her on it. She eats it and the vet said thats fine.
