WOW! i have never heard of most of these. i thought i'd come here andsee what is out there cause i'm about to run out of what the breeder gave me. now i don't normally go to the pet store... well didn't have a reason till now... i take it you can't get most of these at Walmart?:p Troy is eating Pedigree. is that ok? |
I feed Bailey, Hills Prescription Diet i/d, and he loves it! |
What do you think about wellness. I read the label and compared to all the others and I thought it sounded good, but now I am wondering if I made a mistake. |

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...wcat.php/cat/3 Go to the individual food website and most of the websites will give you a list of retailers in your area. Most of these foods will be available at your local feed and seed store, too. Or you can always buy online. |

dangit!! i just bought a big ole bag of it!!!! |
I would donate it to the human society. I too did not do my research when I first got Lexus 3 months ago, I had her on science diet thinking it was a good premium dog food, only to read up on it a little more and find out it is as crappy as puppy chow! Thank god for everyone in this forum, my little princess is on Chicken Soup now and loving it! |

My little guy's on Eukanuba only because that's what he was already being fed at the breeder's. I don't want to switch him right away for fear of upsetting his tummy, but I will begin mixing in some higher quality food in a few weeks. I've written down everyone's suggestions...now it's off to the pet food store to see what's in stock in my area! I'd love to get him on Chicken Soup but I've never seen it in stores here. I do recall seeing Merricks and Canidae though. This thread has been a real eye opener - my bichon spent his entire life on Iams and I thought it was good for him. Guess I was wrong. :( Makes me wonder if he would have lived longer on a higher quality diet. |

- absolutely NO byproducts, which are heads, necks, stomach contents, organs, etc. - no corn or wheat products -- most yorkies are allergic to these - You don't want soy in the dog's food for the same reason as the above. Some dogs have real problems with it. I personally will not feed a food that contains soy. - No chemical preservatives listed on the label like Ethoxyquin, BHA, BHT or Propyl Gallate. You want the food preserved with mixed Tocopherols which is Vitamin E. - You want this listed somewhere on the bag of the dog food: "AAFCO feeding trials confirm that Dog Food Name is complete and balanced for adult dogs or all life stages." This means the food was actually fed to dogs to determine it meets the nutritional needs for adult dogs or for all life stages of the dog. Chicken Soup meets all of these criteria. It is an excellent food. |
OK, I shouldnt, but I am going out on a VERY TIGHT rope! I think if you put the name of ANY dogfood here, someone would find something bad to say about it.... I know they need good food and good products but I dont think sending a new puppy owner into a panic over some dog food filler is a good idea... When I first came here, I surely went into a panic about it and have since learned... if it works for YOUR dog and they are healthy, it is YOUR choice to feed them... I have asked many vets and even know a couple of breeders who say that all of the "fancy" dog food stuff is marketing, to get you to buy their food regardless of what it is. The people who make that dog food list ARE dog food people. My vet does not recommend ANY dog food for that reason... WOW, I cant believe I said some controversial things here, I swore I never would.... Sorry but I just had to.... d |

How can you tell from just looking at your dog whether they are healthy or not? And let's test your theory. I feed Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers' Soul and Canidae All Life Stages. Can you find anything wrong with those foods? I disagree that it is all about marketing. Most of the foods I listed on the poll are marketed very little and some are not marketed AT ALL. I had never even HEARD of these foods before YorkieTalk. I thought that ProPlan was the absolute BEST food on the market until I started doing some research. The foods that do the MOST marketing that I have seen are Science Diet and Pro Plan, which a TON of vets recommend. There are so many better choices out there than these foods, which are the foods that do the most marketing. Thus, I completely disagree that it is all about marketing. |
well, bad thing about Chicken Soup is my dogs wont eat it! But, I am sure someone could come up with something - I didnt say I could or would find anything wrong with any of them, but there are so many different opinions on foods here it is scary and everyone has a different opion. I can look at my baby and tell you if she is feeling well or not.. She is healthy, she visits the vet regularly(since I have so many pups, she goes everytime with me). I check her weight very often and she is great! it is just an opinion, that is all d |

And I completely agree with you with the fact that eating SOMETHING, even if it is Pedigree or Science Diet, is better than eating NOTHING! |
yep, that is exactly where I am with Hope... Tootie would eat a rock but she will not. I have bought every kind of food possible and she is just TOO picky. I may try Canidae this time, it is the only one I have not tried. She is so tiny, I have had to resort to "home cooking" for her for now. I have a easy recipe for "safe" food for her... she will snack sometimes on Royal Canine but I just fed a bag of wellness to my lab cuz NOPE, the little rat would not touch it... I will keep trying until I go thru every brand possible, maybe I will find one for her.... gotta love these babies! d |
Tootiesmom, I cannot believe how picky these little dogs can be. Pookie only eats one brand for a couple of days and then she turns up her nose. It is a pain. Yesterday, she barely ate at all. She turned her nose up at her regular food, so I wound up making her a scrambled egg, feeding her some yoghurt and cottage cheese to round it out. In desperation, I went to the store and got Cesars for her which she loves right now. Who knows how long that will last. And I know it's not the best for her, but better that than nothing. I'm already figuring out what to try next because I'm afraid it won't last. I worry constantly about her, thinking she must have something wrong with her when she won't eat. It's stressful. |
Food Purina Pro Pal (dry) for puppies and Nutro Max canned. For my 13 yr old, just put her on senior dry food (forget the name). |
Wow! I had no idea there were so many differant opinions about food. I had a Cairn Terrier for 16 years and the only time she went to the vet's office was to get her toenails clipped (she freaked out about her toenails and would have to be slightly sedated because of a bad experience at a previous Vet's office - He should not have been allowed to be a Vet) and to get her shots. Anyway Trixie was fed Pedigree and loved it. I now have 2 yorkie's and they are very picky. My newest baby is almost 5 months and if I don't hand feed her she will not eat. I've just recently switched from Science Diet to Chicken Soup, but she's not very interested even out of my hand. I really feel bad now after reading so much bad publicity about store bought food. I guess I was just lucky with Trixie because she was very healthy until the very end. I have really gotten educated with all of everyone's great advice. Keep it up!! |
I feed Tucker Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Puppy. He seems to like it and it doing well on it. Julie and Tucker :aimeeyork |
Anyone else wanna vote?? :) |
I would like to vote but it looks like I got here to late. I feed Diesel soft food in the AM (Natural Balance lamb) and the rest of the day he eats hard food (Innova). |

Hi... do you feed Innova small bites or regular adult? I'm thinking of switching my 2 to Innova but I'm wondering about the kibble size. thanks! |
I feed them Pedigree |

I feed Abby Royal Canin. That is what I was feeding Leo my Rattie so that is what I started feeding her. I am thinking about offering her the Royal Canin 'Yorkie Diet' they have along with the regular RC |
since this thread started, I tried ANOTHER on the picky one! I bought Wellness and NOPE, she wont eat it.... NONE of them will, not even the lab.. I have been feeding it to the stray cats that I have adopted... that is so sad..LOL |
