| Dark Almost Black Stool Angel got spayed on Mon. She had her first bowel movement after surgery on Tue. morning. Since Tue., her stool has been very dark. It looks like it could almost be black. The vet tech called on Tue. to check on Angel, and I told her that Angel's stool is darker than usual. She said she wouldn't worry and said at least she's pooing. Is this normal? When your Yorkies got spayed, did the colour of their stool change? I was given Metacam (pain meds) to give to Angel on Tue., Wed., and Thur. morning. Could the pain meds and the other drugs she was given for surgery affect the colour of her stool? Her stool seems to be firm except for some smaller bits. |

| I picked up the small bits today with toilet paper, and they smeared and looked very dark brown in colour. |

| Just now seeing this thread. Hope he is better by now. I found this link that does say dark brown could indicate bleeding and since the pain medicine is a member of the aspirin family it could be a bleeding stomach ulcer - make sure you are giving the meds on a full stomach and don't let it continue long or he might become anemic. http://www.kerryblues.info/index.htm...LEARNWALK.HTML |

I was also only feeding her soft food after 3 canines were pulled, and they also yanked a loose premolar on her left side. I gave her kibble Wed. and Thur. for dinner mixed with soft food, and today I'm back to just kibble for all meals. She's had this soft food before, but it's always been mixed with kibble. Could this change affect the colour too? Last edited by DJ30; 10-06-2006 at 05:08 AM.

| I wouldn't worry about dark stools for a day or so occasionally - especially following a procedure with meds - and other changes. I know that occasionally my dogs have "almost black" stools. They have never been sick. This is probably caused by whatever they have eaten recently, and it has never been a problem at all. Carol Jean |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | My baby Chanel had been sick the last few days - really sick to the point of me going to the vet but then she perked up ....her stools were dark black yesterday too - and I think she's ok now. I had given her pepto bismal on advise from a friend and hopefully today will be ok..... Good luck with your baby - I know medication will cause changes in the stools - you're doing the right thing keeping a good eye on them |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Thank you !! That's what I thought....and today she seems better but still has the runs....it went from throwing up to this ....and even my little water baby is tired of her 'butt' baths....the minute she 'goes' ...she walks up to me with those little ears down and I swear she's saying..."ok mom ...one more time" ....but what used to be a big happy face about bath time ...is now a sad face |

Oh sorry I see someone else posted that info. Poor baby, I hope she's better now so you can leave her butt alone. LOL
