Picky eater?? I just discovered something about our new pup. He would sniff his food and walk away. That's what he's been doing for days. I just switched his food so I thought it's the new food that he didn't like (I've been mixing his food for almost 2 weeks). I took a few of the new kibbles out and gave them to him by hand and he ate them. Then I put a few kibbles down on the towel that we use under his dishes and he ate them off the towel. So, then I put some on a small plate and he has been snacking off of the plate. Why is he not eating out of his dish? It's clean. I don't get it. My husband is currently deployed, and on the phone this morning he asked if his dishes were plastic... yes they are. So he said to try a stainless steel dish. Is this odd? He GULPS his water just fine out of his water bowl but won't touch his food. Has ANYONE else had this problem????? Just seems odd to me. We've always owned great danes and I'm new to the yorkie world. I'm learning everyday. Thanks for anyone who has any input for me.

Yes, I had the same problem. I would throw the dry food so it would bounce off the baseboards, one bite at a time. She would run over and eat it. I guess it let her feel like a hunter. It had to be a game before she would eat. She would also eat out of my hand sometimes, never her dish. I did this 3 or 4 times a day. She was not a good eater for the first 6 months. Now she nibbles, but loves her treats more. She does eat out of her dish now, but it took a number of months before she would. She is 1 year old as of 2 weeks ago.

Glad I'm not the only one with this problem lol. But... I don't want to start any bad habits that I don't have the intention of doing forever, if you know what I mean. I have three skin children ages 8, 5, and 2. Handfeeding my Rocky is certainly out of the question. I figure, if he gets hungry enough, he'll eat. I was just curious if this is typical behavior or if this was odd lol. Maybe I'll just continue to feed him on a plate???? Thanks for the reply!!

I am going to buy stainless steel like my husband suggested. Just was curious to know if anyone had an idea what the difference would be? His breeder fed him out of plastic.

People said to me "she won't starve, she will eventually eat", not true. I tried that. The next thing I knew I was giving her Nutri-Cal and she was weak. She would not eat without my help. Of course she is fine now that she is older. Also, I was trying not to give her snacks because I wanted her to eat healthy. Finally, I started to give her snacks and she started to gain weight. I was happy she ate anything! She still does not eat much regular food, about 1 or 2 tablespoons a day, at most. But she loves her snacks and she made it to 3lbs 12oz.

That's just odd. There was no medical problem? Most healthy animals wont' skip too many meals. If a dog is willing to starve themselves in front of a bowl of food...... I don' t get it. I do know I'm not hand feeding him. I'll put it down. If he eats it, then great, if not then go hungry I guess . He just snacks here and there. Hope that's good enough.

Yeah, I heard that before. These are plastic outside and a glass-like material on the inside. Hard to explain. I will check out either the ceramic or the ss dishes. Family dollar here has the small ss dishes for a dollar

No health problems at all. She is very healthy, but she was small. She was the runt of a regular size litter. She was 2lbs for months. That changed when I started to give her treats. I was worried because she was so small. I had her at the Vets every week to be weighed to make sure she did not lose weight. I am so happy she is bigger now.

| Picky eater-mine too! Hi. I have 6 1/2 mo old yorkie named Teddy Bear and he is also a picky eater. I found some food he likes (Royal Canin) for small breed puppies but often times he will not eat out of his bowl. Sometimes I have to sprinkle pieces of food on the floor, or he wants to eat of my hand, or even out of the measuring spoon I use to scoop his food. He also likes to grab a piece of food out of his bowl then hop onto my lap, eat the bite of food then hop down and get some more food, and on and on. This can be quite time consuming but he just wants attention. He's just goofy! But I love him anyway. Just make sure your puppy eats.

Of course I will put food down for him. But I'm not starting any bad habits that I honestly have no intention of continuing. I am the same way with my children. You eat what I fix or go to bed hungry and wait till breakfast. Is all I can really do is put the food in his bowl. It's there for him to eat. I will try to buy a new bowl and see if that helps. Picky eaters are not born, they are created.

He actually ate a plate of food (lol @ plate). I put more on there and he's ate it. So he's ate a little over a 1/4 cup this morning total. Seems to have worked!!!! Maybe he realized ... I dont' know ... but he finally ate a real meal this morning. His weight is good. He's not too ribby. Thanks for all the replies!!!
